The Lord Still Reigns

Another great Week! Since our last post, we have had more time to finish the Aim boy's apartment. This Sunday was their last sunday with the Leon Sur congregation. They still have one week in Mexico before they head out to the states.

On Thursday, four men from the congregation, Guanajuato, and the Libertad church and I traveled to 2 1/2 hours away for the anual meeting for the religious association in Queretaro Mexico. At this meeting one representative from over 150 congregations came together to discuss legal issues of the church. We are blessed to be one of the congregations that has always done whatever the government wants us to do. After the first year as a congregation, the Libertad church is considering joining the association. It was good to talk to brothers and have time to converse, especially with Israel Molina and Lalo Rocha from Mexico City.

Our church needs a board of directors, that changes every 5 years. This year is the year that new directors take over. God raised new, younger, leadership and gave the older leaders some needed rest. Please pray for the direction in which the church needs to go to stay legal so that the congregation can be permanent.

Every first month of the year, Leon celebrates the foundation of the city. Part of the celebration is the state fair, which is located a few blocks from our house and lasts 5 weeks. Since it is a good and fun time for many we notice that Mexico is moving away from the violence and financial struggles from the past. People are moving, spending money, having fun and just living. Our church is in a good place financially to pay bills etc, but we are still searching a few ways to purchase the building.

Today at church we were blessed to see consistency in many of our member, and God blessed us with another great sermon from Ben. Some people were sad to see the Aimers leave, but after worship we showed a short video reminding the congregation all the work Aimers have done in Leon. This video will be shown at their Aim graduation in March. Unfortunately, our family will not be able to make it to graduation, but we know that those who go will be blessed. After church Gloria, one of the members, invited us all over to her house to eat and celebrate our last days with the Aimers. It was a good time of fellowship.

On Saturday we took some time to have fun with the youth watching a movie. We know that God is working with the youth and Ivan and Isa as they teach and guide them. Please keep praying for the church growth. There is always time with people missing ministries and not taking advantage of all the work going on. They miss out and need help to get back up and keep going.

His Glory is revealed in us

"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed."

1 Peter 4:12-13

In the last week we have been blessed by good news. But it is time to begin a new era of ministry. For some time now we have been able to see our kids grow fast. The Lord gave them to us and we know we are responsible for many aspects of their lives. Having grandparents close has been a true blessing. In Leon this month it is the time for the state fair. So we took the time to have fun. Seeing our children grow up with good influences, like the AIMers, people at church and grandparents is priceless. We are reaching a time of more maturity in ourselves as leaders, but also our families playing a different role. School and dedication to our kids and their lives slowly takes more time, because we do not want to just work with people, but lose our children. Please continue to pray for them as Tana and I struggle with being parents. Most of all we thank God for all his good blessings.

This week Saturday we will return the Aim boy apartment in. This ends an era of moving furniture and keeping up with bills and contracts since the first group of AIMers in 2006. Since then we have collected many household items from both girl and boy houses. All the furniture from the girl's house was donated to the children's home here in Leon (Lluvia Temprana). Many AIMers and members of the congregation have worked with this home and we knew it would be a blessing for them. In addition to this, all the furniture from the Boys' house was donated to a new missionary family coming from Venezuela to work in Morelia Mexico. The few odd pieces were sold in a small garage sale and those funds were used for all the expenses of returning both houses in good condition. The Lord is amazing in providing what everyone needs in the time needed. We hope to send a video about some influence AIMers have had in Leon, to be shared at the graduation this March 10, 2012. Although we won't be there, the extended Leon influence will glorify God in Lubbock.

Birthdays are special moments in any person's life. It is a special feeling to know that a church has reached one year of existence and ministry. The Lord has used in his mission people like Alfonso, Carlos, Beto, and Sergio to lead this new congregation at La Libertad. Since our arrival here in Leon, we have taken time to be with them and many AIMers have influenced their lives. We praise God for the multiplicity of people involved to make this church grow. They decided to invite my father, Jose Palafox, from Guadalajara to share with them on this special day. It was a great day to see them have the church decorated, food prepared, kids ready to sing special songs, and lots of fellowship. We know that the Spirit of God is working in this church. Please pray for their continual growth and their new vision to meet in a bigger place and be more missional.

Lastly, we would like to remind ourselves that God is molding and shaping the church at Leon Sur. In our first strategies and plans as a missionary team, we discussed different things that we had to do, but after years of work we can see that only God knows what is best for his people. The three shepherds that are leading the congregation have taken more ownership and empowerment for the year of 2012. We are glad to see their wives and the core membership decide to be more involved in their cell groups, youth group and ministries, and children's ministries. Our concern about a meeting place is still being prayed for this month and some preparations are being made to look for options. Our last resort would be to meet in a park. Although the beginning of my discipleship class was a failure, in my frustration we have to understand that people are slowly transformed by His word, and not by many classes.

Ben and Jazmin Baker have been a steady and consistent ministry in our church that has given confidence to our church. Ben has been preaching all the sermons since the beginning of this year and he will continue to preach from the Gospel of John. It is worth noting that Jazmin's ministries are a blessings to the congregation and in the midst of her pregnancy she is hospitable and open to continuing her work at the church. Pray for their baby, Shannon, who should be born soon. This week we will have a lot to prepare for and our annual preacher meeting in Queretaro. We also will be praying this whole month and then have a special prayer night at the end of this month and we ask that you will join us in prayer this month for the vision of what is happening in Leon Sur.

We would like to share real quick that we have created a new fund, specifically for special benefits for our family. We have special needs on the mission field and these so called benefits are many times not considered part of the missionary's salary. Good Week end! and we pray a start for 2012.

Our week end was filled with much blessings, and also great challenges. Worship was about seventy people. And Ben Baker started the new lessons from the Gospel according to John for the semester. He did a good job in presenting Jesus to the church as the writer intended to compose. Most of the church is beginning to realize that 2012 will be a blessed year. And to hear these ideas about Christ will give us a good foundation to make choices and move foward. During the week Ben and I met with the elders to discuss his role as the preacher and the implementation of these sermons into our cell groups. We took the time during the adult class to bring together all the classes from 11 years old and up and we began a month of prayer for what God will do this year.

We will take some weeks to pray and on the last Wednesday of January we are planning a night of prayer to ask God for guidance for the congregation. Our special request is health for our elders who all are struggling in some way, strength in families, the return of some who have left, and the departure of our last Aimers. The Lord is blessing us with the last weeks of AIMers in Leon. Princeton and Dani are keeping busy visiting prisons, house studies, one on one conversations, and just being servants to us. We know that it is not easy for them to be the last two Aimers, but we know that they will finish strong.

WE took the time to sell some of the extra stuff collected over the year to help with expenses for the beginning of the year. Our garage sell started very early on Saturday and we sold things cheap, which is very uncommon in Mexico, but we wanted to do a quick fundraiser. We were blessed to be ministered to by the Manzanares family and the Rosa family, both members of our church. They brought us breakfast and help us during the selling. We praise God for all that happened.

Today our church rent was due and for the first time we did not have enough to pay it. But, when this was presented to the elders they responded providing what was lacking with faith in God. We are blessed to see them at work with such confidence and when we payed the rent to the owner she expressed that she really needs and wants to sell the building to us, because of some health issues. If you have 150,000 dollars to help us buy this building please let us know. Otherwise, we ask for your continual prayers so that God can show Leon Sur their place of worship and prayer. If we owned this building then the money spent in rent and utilities could be used for a continual expansion of the kingdom so we see this purchase as an investment.

We thank you for everything you have done and for all the people touched, like Beto in Ecuador, Rafa, and Andrea in Lubbock and Evelyn who is back and finished with her Aim time. I will start classes tomorrow from ACU, it seems like a good time to learn and we are watching Emma and Maicah grow and they are happy. We are looking forward to next week, the first anniversary of the Libertad Church.

Kicking off the New Year

We praise God for a good beginning of 2012. This week we took some time to re-dream with people and share a new vision from the church. We worked on some ideas for events, seminars, classes, and work. It was presented to the church and soon the elders will finalize the calendar for the year. It is not easy to come back to the grindstone after two weeks of fellowship, food and relaxation, not to mention very cold weather (for Mexico). We were encouraged by a good worship and blessed to have a very good Sunday praising and worshiping our God. We had new visitors and a great start. Our elders and their wives are encouraged and a few members are wanting to do more, step up and work more in the church this year.

Part of this semester our brother, Ben Baker, will be preaching through the gospel of John and sharing Jesus. We are also hoping to divide the youth group into a young singles class and high school class to help be able to teach to them on their different levels. We would like to ask you to pray specifically for our offering. Since the beginning of this church plant Leon Sur has paid for their own bills and as life changes we hope this doesn't get affected. This also includes using the church building more and using our resources more to the benefit of the congregation.

Pleas also keep in mind the first anniversary of the church in La Libertad that is coming up at the end of this month. If you would like to send any notes or gifts to them let us know. We would love to share what you send with them to encourage them.
Finally, this week our kids went back to school in cold weather but with good attitudes. They were happy to spend time with friends and family and stay here in Leon for Christmas, but they were excited to start school. Next week I will be beginning more courses at ACU and we are planning our trip to the border soon to renew the car visa. We are also planning and preparing for the departure in February of our last two Aimers.

This week Roberto Rubio Jr. (Beto) preached for us while he is here visiting from the School in Quito Ecuador. His sermon was very challenging and we know that God will continue to mature him in many ways. He is finishing up his time and in May he will graduate from the school after three years of hard work. His desire is to come to Leon and work with the church after he graduates and we think that God could use him for His glory here in Leon.

GDL Church

WE started the year with a new congregtion in worship. Our time with the El Colli Church of Christ has always been a great time. It is in this congregation that my ministry started many some 22 years ago. The congregation lead by my parents is a blessing to many not only locally, but in other places like us in Leon. Their work is a place where disicpleship and church planting is part of everyday life. Many have been blessed to now be in different churches but they were brought to Jesus here. The hard level of discipleship from the leaders is an example we must all follow to be this long serving our king.

After the worship on Sunday we had the opportunity to share a meal with them. We had pozole, cake, and gelatine. Every first of the year is a special time since it is my father's birthday. So the church always honors him with gifts, food, and good fellowship. The congregation was doing much outside of themselves that now 2012 will be a focusing inside for their maturity. Please keep them in your prayers, as well as some good future ministries that the Lord will allow us to share with them.

As we begin this year we are asking for special prayers for the future of Leon Sur. We are intending to take some time in prayer in the month of January to prepare some ministies. Ben Baker will be the new preacher for the congregation, we desire to split our bible classe differently from age groups, new cells, ladies classes, discipelship classes, giving, prayer, helping the communities around us, and soon the Church at La Libertad will be celebrating their first anniveriary, we will attend the meeting from all the churches in Mexico, travel to Torreon, Queretaro, etc. So we are busy as the year starts. Also we need to make a run to the border to renew our car visa, I will be taking some classes at Abilene Christian University, and also we will see our last two AIMers depart, we are asking for tour prayers in all these plans, and more. Tana was invited to speak at the Cuernavaca ladies day, we had some good time in preparing to see the AIMers in Mexico city, but we will not be able to attend graduation in Lubbock.

During the Christmas break we had a blessing in seeing Ramiro, Evelyn, Donovan and his parents, Andrea, and good people who do God's work. Also we met some good Venezuelan families who will be working in Morelia with the church. So we know this will be a great year.

All we ask is that God will reign in our lives. Our kids are going back to school on the 9th after the celebration of King's Day. The Lord will give us what we need. But we need some answers about our plans in 2014. Our excitement is high, but we need some more partners who will bless our needs. WE thank you for blessing our 2012 with prayer. But this is a new stage in our ministries.

"Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them."

James 4:13-17

As 2011 comes to an end we recognize God's presence in all of our ups and downs in ministry, family, and friends. Most importantly we recognize that He is present at all times and under all circumstances. In the last years we have seen people leave Leon, the church, and even God. This is not comforting, after years of working with people, but we understand that the dependency of God must never be placed on relationships with people but on relationship with Him. Challenges that shake and move our faith always show our faithfulness. There has been so many individual ministries where people have expressed their desire to be in Christ and we see them falling short. Our hope is to continue to mature our eldership, teachers, deacons, evangelists, and the house groups. All these parts of the church we hope become an icon in Leon for Christ.

Our role of missionary has begun in a new phase of diminishing what we do. This is what we need and want, but it is not easy to watch. It is hard to let others take over leadership and do what it took many years of effort and dedication to begin. But it is vital for the church to continue on its own with a local leadership that is in tune to the culture. 2011 was the year to face failures and restructure our understanding of missions. In other words we understand that it is not enough to just baptize people, but to teach them of a long life of discipleship ahead.

Also in 2011 we were blessed to see many people in faith come to maturity. The members at Leon Sur and also the church in Libertad are able to relate better. The youth are growing and taking some bigger roles as young adults in the church. The church's giving has been constant regardless of more or less people. God has continued to provide what is needed. The classes for adults, children, teens continue to grow. We are confidant that 2012 will be a good year for the church here in Leon.

Our request is that all of you who read our posts and our websites will continue to help us finish our commitment until 2014. Our needs are many and our challenges move our faith, but we plead to all of you that you continue to give, pray, and encourage the way you have in the past. We pray and ask for knowledge of how to do these things better. We understand that you may be facing the same things that we are facing this new year and know that we pray for you. Please continue to use all the ways of communication that technology offers us today. God is present in everything and he is being God in his kingdom.

Fifth Lady's Day 2011

The fifth annual ladies day here at the congregation in Leon Sur church was a success. We had around 130 women and 40 children come to the day. It was a blessing to see this year more women from around Leon and many friends of our members. We also had churches from three different congregations in Mexico City, one from Guanajuato, Celaya, La Libertdad, San Miguel de Allende, Juventino Rosas, and a few other congregations from around this area of the state of Guanajuato.

Our guest speaker was Juanita Rosas. She does many women's classes and is a frequent speaker in the churches around Cancun. She lives and works with her husband in the states, but two of her sons work here with us in Leon and her coming was a blessing. The classes she taught were over inner-health. She helped us to see how important Christ's sacrifice and love is for our own inner beauty and health spiritually. The dynamics she had planned were wonderful, bringing the women together.

The fellowship, singing, food and small classes in between were wonderful. The women from Leon Sur pulled together and organized some great snacks, breakfast, lunch and decorations. The work was hard, but it created unity among the local members and the women have all grown in many ways.

The time also included may of our young ladies sharing different religious poetry as a different way to show how people can worship and celebrate being a child of God. It was a wonderful way to unify them with all the other things being done.

At the end of the day, all the ladies from Leon Sur were acknowledged for their hard work and love towards all the women and of course the men were acknowledged for all their work fixing food and especially taking care of the children. It was a good day, tiring, but worth all the work put into it. Many women, new and old to Christ, were blessed.

We thank Juanita for her time spent in preparation and her time in teaching and encouraging women and her family. Thanks to all who were praying and help prepare the church for this day. God Bless.

Circular work, no end and no beginning.

In the last month we have been blessed to be busy, and we are looking forward to some time to rest in the next weeks. As 2011 comes to an end we are preparing to see most of our AIMers depart, a Lady's day, maturity in leadership, work in the Cañada community, and having some good time seeing God at work with people we love. First, we would like to thank God for making transitions, provision, and care for individuals possible. See, for many years we have tried to plant a church with ministries, and evangelism. But now we are observing the growth produced of the plant. In some cases people have left us for different reasons. Although those who are willing to submit to the elders, teachers, and vision of the church have taken ownership of the body. The original team's intentions are not important anymore. Plans, vision, direction, etc have to be provided according to the Leon Culture.
One great part of this month was that Tana's Parents and Grandparents came to visit. We tired them out showing them all the great parts of Leon and even Guadalajara. They were able to spend good time with the kids and see the work we do, meeting many members and enjoying good food. It was a great blessing for Tana, that her parents could see her life, that Mexico is a great place to live and for them to see the work we do. We hope and pray that they can come again and visit. It was a true blessing to see them.

During this month many more things will change. For example the AIM girls house will be dismantled. All their belonging will be donated to the Children's home where they have worked since day one of their arrival. IT is sad to see all the collection of history made for some years now. In January we will do the same to the AIM boys apartment. This includes much work. We have to prepare, paint, clean, and fix things. Personally, we had to get all properties rented in our names, even if the rent did not come from us. The apartement for the boys, the girls house and the church building. Not to mention our own house. It is a lot of responsibility to make sure all four properties are paid every-month with all bills. But starting in January we will only be in charge of our own house. God has provided much money, time, people, and good protection to accomplish these transitions.

Also during the month we have tried to work with our elders. These three couples are struggling and wrestling everyday to lead the congregation. Some times it is about their own struggles, other times it is dealing with members, plans, etc. But we are glad to see that their dedication has paid off in many ways. The congregation has lost members but it has gained more ownership. People are willing to take the challenge in their own hands. We do not want to see people depart, the church needs to redream and make plans for 2012. Our prayer is that others will step up to build the congregation in youth, ladies, children, evangelism, preaching, classes, etc. Especially because the congregation will not have AIMers anymore. It will be tough but the Holy Spirit will lead them, and us.

The church in Guadalajara celebrated their 22 year aniversary. It was a good time to see that much of their work has been done outside by their members. Tepic, Tepatitlan, Tequila, and Zapopan have been blessed with their efforts. People are willing to step out in their vacations, spent their own money, and more to share Jesus.

As a highlight of the month, I would like to mention the work the Rosas family has done. Manolo and his brother Luis have blessed the congregation with many talents to help others lead. These times of creating spaces for mexican leadership to come to the top is not easy. But the Lord has provided people like the Rosas to help carry the load. WE had some good time honoring them and celebrating with some Brazilian food. We pray that 2012 will be a good year to see them participate more in the church. Also, please keep Mariana in your prayers. She is applying to Harding University in Arkansas, but we are not certain of the final word. Her second option is to attend the university of Guanajuato. She is great, and we would like to see her be blessed with a good education.

Part of the end of the year celebration is a time to enjoy Thanksgiving. This year we were blessed to have the Gonzales family come from Morelia, as well as the Family International Ministries. These good friends as well as AIMERs, and the Baker family blessed our house with good time together. We had good food lead by Dani Muñoz, Tana, and Ann. The celebration included good singing, prayer, and games. A true Thanksgiving day. In this new world of chaos we need to stay together in our lives with people who love the Lord. And we thank God for providing good times like these for us.

Every first Tuesday of the month we have taken time to work with children in La Cañada community. The AIMes have taken the role of leading classes, shows, crafts, fun, and more. So this time to end the year we decided to have a good time celebrating Jesus birth. We had over sixty kids. Singing was great, we had some good crafts, classes, and at the end we celebrated with a piñata, candy, and some fruit. We intend to keep having a presence in this community in 2012. But we hope to find more support from the congregation instead of AIMers. God is good to allow us to be a light in a place that needs more spiritual direction. We have given out bibles, classes, and many individual conversations. So we know God is at work planting seeds in people's lives.

During the month of December we had two of our AIMers finish their time. We saw Jeni depart to California, and Chris move back to Alaska. These two students did a great job in supporting the congregation in La Libertad church. They loved their members, served them, and gave more than they were asked to give. Also, Jeni did the same for the Leon Sur Congregation. On Sunday after a long day Dani and Princeton organized a good bye party, and she was honored with many people coming to see her. WE had prayer, and time to speak out about her influence in our lives. As an AIM coordinator is the hardest aspect of work. WE mature the student and when they are ready to perform they depart. Our prayer is that they will continue to use their gifts, talents for the kingdom.

Finally we would love to share that Beto came to see his family from the Preaching school he is attending in Ecuador. He came to be here for the holidays, and we know his graduation will be soon in May. WE pray that his work may be focused in Leon after school. WE need preachers, and leaders who can mature the church and bring new souls to the kingdom.

And from the AIM program we have two ladies coming to see the church in Leon too. Andrea who is in the program will be here for the holidays and soon will be moving to North Ireland to do her AIM time. Evelyn is finishing her time in Scotland and will be coming to be home before making new plans for 2012. And lastly is Rafa who is also in Scotland. He will be on the field until the beginning of 2012 and soon be returning. These young men and women are awesome fruits from the work in Leon. This work has never been done by one person, family, or group. It has always been the work of the Holy Spirit providing what is needed.

We know this is a long post, and we want to stay busy. God is providing many things for us to finish. It was a year to observe and watch what was modeled and equipped. And we are glad to see his hand in many ways. Also, I finished 2/3 of my schooling. And soon I will have to decide about my doctorate future. Our prayer is that we will be strong in staying in Leon until 2014 as we made a covenant. But after this we are searching for answers. Please pray for us, and the adjustments that come with AIMERs leaving, elders working, ministries changing, and culture struggles. WE thank you for the support you have given us. And we love seeing his Spirit guide all we do.

The Liberty Church of Christ is growing up!

"And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it." Matthew 16:18

The Liberty Church is growing up! It is in this December last year that fifteen people from the Leon Sur church decided to step outside to begin a new congregation. God had worked with Alfonso and Carmen for a long time. And this time was perfect for them to lead a small group to be a church. We had confidence, and the church in Leon Sur was sending them with blessings. During the last year we have seen very little additions to the group, but those in the group have grown in their service to one another. WE praise the Lord for his work with Alfonso, Carlos, Chris, Alberto, Sergio, and many women who have their breakfast once a week like Leon Sur does.

It has been a good time to realize that they were not kidding when they decided to move to a place where the Gospel is needed desperately. The city of Leon has moved and grown so fast that these areas, such as Libertad, is the perfect place to be. Soon Chris and Jeni will be finishing their time as AIMers. So the church will be needing some help. But we pray that they will be as driven, and committed as they have been.

In the last months some of the members from Leon Sur which used to worship with us are meeting with them. WE know Jesus builds his church. So these people need direction, help, and love. The Liberty Church is the place to provide these to them. On December 9th there will be a celebration of Quinciañera for one of their girls. We hope to be there with them. And later in December we will celebrate and honor God for what he is doing in Leon through this awesome church. God is great! And so are those who love his word.

Community is a place to serve, know, and be.

Living in community is more than just sharing a common house. We have had a crazy week with many events happening, reminding us how life is filled with moments where we can serve and honor one another, being part of a family. Many times we are so concerned about planting churches and maturing people as if it was a process without life, but maturity takes time and growth is not instant.

For example this week we saw Nick leave his AIM time in Leon. It was a time for him to change his life and go home to family. But, the work here in Leon continues as he was just a part of us for awhile and now he will continue to grow somewhere else. In the next weeks we will see Jeni and Chris depart also, so the time of closing with AIM in Leon is approaching. God has created a good relationship with 20+ AIMers that have come through and worked here in Leon.

On Saturday some of the ladies honored Ben and Jazmin with a baby shower. The majority of the ladies from church came, although some do not participate because they do not have money to give. Their time together was beneficial and Jazmin felt loved and blessed. The ladies had fun with games and food and showered Jazmin with presents and love. We hope and pray for her pregnancy to do well as she is due soon, in February. They are doing well in the ministry here, preaching and helping with the youth. Leon Sur loves them and they are a good help in building the community.

On Thursday we celebrated Thanksgiving with the Baker family, the AIMers, and the Gonzalez family from Morelia. New acquaintances from a group called "international family" also stopped by for dessert and coffee. We celebrated with good food, fellowship and a time of talent show. It was good to see our kids have fun with the other children. We also got to see that God is working in other cities in Mexico and community is bigger than we think. God is using people and his community is growing in many places.

Lasty, we are reminded this week of our community abroad. We decorated the bulletin boards at church and this one honors the three youth that are from the congregation in Leon Sur and now on the mission field doing different works. Beto Rubio, in Ecuador, and Rafael and Evelyn in Scotland. They are doing good work for God and he is blessing what they do. We also have Andrea Espindola, who is in Lubbock right now in the AIM program and then she will be going to the Mission field soon. God is working in all of their lives and he blesses us through seeing the work they do.

We want to thank God for our supporters who are a part of all this community. We know that they are part of this from a distance and through all these pictures we hope to keep them informed in what is going on. Thank you for all your love and support.

Revolution in Church

Today we have a day off in Mexico. On this anniversary we remember the fight between ideals, land, and most importantly the unification of a country divided by all kinds of heroes. Fights for what is being believed as truth are not pretty. Biblically we find many times devastation because of passion.

Jesus said: "unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds."

This weeks we have experienced many turmoils, fights, and struggles in ministry. Passions, views, beliefs, etc come in to revolutionize all we do. All these changes are not necessarily bad. When these moments of growth are viewed with God's perspective, then we can understand only he is sovereign. Every week emotions are changed with birthdays, conversations, visits, bible studies, and more. If we would allow ourselves to shrink away from all these things then it would not be something that is multipliable.

Our church in Leon Sur has gone through different changes and sometimes even small revolutions. There is no doubt that people have died spiritually and in some cases physically. When we look at the relationship of leadership in the congregation, it's no different. This month of November we celebrate one year of eldership in the congregation. Some people have mixed feelings and others are very positive about it. All we have to say is that we made it through one year. These six men and women of God have struggled with health, money, family, and themselves, but we are confident that the Holy Spirit knows what he is doing in their lives. In the next weeks we will be planning the next year with them and maybe making some changes in the church and at the end of the story all of these battles have produced one church.

We have seen in our life people like Jose and Maria Palafox, who have labored for 22 years, celebrate this November. If we would take the time to see what they have done we would find the same struggles and differences among people, but the congregation is still there. God's design of church has been to be multilayered, but always directed to the simple practices of loving one another. God would prefer for us to still be trying as we die, than to just step away and be dead also. The difference would be that one death is an end and the other one is the beginning of many more seeds to come to life.

My family and I would like to praise God today for what he has done through you, supporters family and friends, who make it possible for us to be here. Not only do you help through money, but also with emotional support and most importantly we thank you for your prayers. God Bless

Establish Autonomous Churches
Our goal is to establish churches that establish churches. Our goal is to win people to Christ and train them to win others. We want to plant churches that will grow and plant other churches. (2 Timothy 2:2)

Evangelism
Our goal in evangelism is to meet a known need (in many cases through counseling especially marriage counseling) so that we can meet an unknown need (salvation). Relationships are very important in building trust, and are very important in the evangelism process in Mexico. The part of Mexico where we serve isn’t very open to the gospel, and we are seen as cults, so relationships and meeting needs are very important. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Discipleship / Leadership Training
After a person comes to know Christ, we want to help them to grow in their relationship with Christ to maturity.(Colossians 1:28) As they grow, we train them in evangelism, and help them get involved in doing the work of the ministry. (Ephesians 4:11-12) Our job as church planters is to work ourselves out of a job.

Dependence on God
We believe that the best way to live is in a trusting relationship with God.
God, after all, can manage our lives better than we can.
These links point to ways the people of Storyline Community live out this value for dependence on God.

Mission
Mission is how we live for something bigger than ourselves. God has called us as a church to participate in his mission of inviting humanity into loving relationship with God and others made possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus. We participate in this mission as we make new followers and churches, show hospitality to strangers, serve the cause of justice and adapt to new challenges that come our way.

Life Change
We believe God can fix our brokenness. God can change our character to become more like Jesus’ character. He can help us begin to love other people more than ourselves. As we experience life change, we reflect God’s image with our unique gifts and abilities. We extend our resources on behalf of others. We resist materialism and consumption and find more in less.

Genuine Relationships
Church is about making real friends. The way of Jesus isn’t just about experiencing right relationship with God; it’s also about experiencing right relationships with others. Tana's words: Month of growth

Elders are meeting more, learning from each other and working better as a group. Please continue to pray for them.

This month of October passed by quickly. I know that even though this year we are letting the church handle more things on their own, we did spend a lot of time helping and guiding the elders. They have done a great job leading the members and using this verse in 1 John to guide their decisions. All of us have grown in continuing in Christ, through all we have been through. The elders have had their own struggles, with health, spirit and other things. But this month of October was really focused on leadership. We took them out to dinner and heard from them all and saw there growth.

GROWTH IN DEACONS.

Even though the elders have not formally announced deacons the congregation has grown in October. We have seen many men and women step up into the roles that help to let the elders spend more time to shepherding the flock. The women have especially stepped up and grown in many ways, taking on serving roles and helping do the daily, monotonous roles that many do not think about in the church. I believe that this past month has been great. If I could take a snapshot of the whole year, October would be it, showing the growth and desire of many in the church. Keep praying for the growth and leadership. Right now they are planning the next year, so pray for that too.

PERSONAL NOTE: This month has been good for me. I am getting to spend more time with the kids and they are growing. I am learning from them! Pray for me in November, I will be trying write a novel in 30 days. It has been a goal of mine.

Leadership

The congregation is coming together more and more to learn how to be better leaders in church and in the community. This month we had a great two night seminar that really showed that even many youth want to grow in this area.

Cañada Community

Every week some of our Aimers go out to the housing community on the other side of Leon. The members of the church and the Aimers are leaving a good presence and now a few women want to study and some or our members want to start a church out there. Pray for the growth of God in this community.

Traditions
Here in Mexico Halloween did not used to be celebrated. Its getting easier to find this kind of stuff here, so we had a mini family time to carve pumpkins. It was fun, and we try to make sure they have all types of cultural experiences so they feel comfortable in the U.S. and Mexico.

La Libertad Church and their fellowship time

If we could imagine hearing this: "God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn't get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out"

The Church is here. He is building his church, or as the message reads "put together." If you are not excited to hear this may be because church planting is not your gift. But for me recently this has been a renewing of vision, plans, and even devotion to Jesus. We have seen many churches start, and when we take time to analyze things only the Lord could have done it. We praise him constantly, although we are not always walking through pink beautiful times, we know he is able to carry his church in love.

This Novemeber is a marker that we can set as the time to see Leon Sur be blessed with elders, and also the new start of La Libertad church here in Leon. God has taken people in a journey of spirituality. Apostles, prophets, teachers, evangelist, givers, mercy givers, and more together working to reach those who need Jesus. Many times we forget how blessed we are in being able to partake in his mission on earth. The year 2011 has had its ups and downs. Expectations come from all directions, with many flavors, desires and frustrations. And that is not all. We have seen joy, partnership, understanding, fellowship, salvation, etc happen too.

Jesus never promised only green pastures.
Recently the churches in Tequila and Silao had to be placed on hold. And I am sure that in many places the church has not moved forward. But we praise God for what is happening in places like Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Morelia, D.F., and Juventino Rosas. Our limited vision of the church shapes what we can do next year. As you plan for the future in the end of the year with thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Keep God's mission in your sight. We need partners to continue to shape with us what could be done in Mexico.

Please pray for a non-profit foundation that might be formed, new ministries in the community with children and recovery programs, our continual work with the children's home, the search for the preacher for Leon sur, a building for La Libertad church, a new opening for church plant, ministry work without Aimers, the christian newspaper, and many other things we are continuing in Leon.

On a personal note, please continue to pray for us to work here in Leon with the church and to find more partners to be able to keep doing that. With elections coming up in both Mexico and the U.S. we pray for stability and continual work in both churches in Mexico and the U.S.

Many of us would leave the conversation with Jesus, just like Peter did, with doubt. But, we hope that one day we may be bold enough to be filled with the spirit as Peter was in order to build Jesus' church.

Cultural Differences

Time orientation

There are cultural variations in how people understand and use time. Researchers have found that individuals are divided in two groups in the ways they approach time.
Monochronic individuals are those who prefer to complete one task at a time. For them, task-oriented time is distinguished from socio-emotional time. In other words, there is a time to play and a time to work. These individuals value punctuality, completing tasks, and keeping to schedules. They view time as if it were linear, that is, one event happening at a time. Examples of monochronic cultures include the U.S., Israel, Germany, and Switzerland.
Polychronic individuals, on the other hand, are more flexible about time schedules; they have no problem integrating task-oriented activities with socio-emotional ones. For them, maintaining relationships and socializing are more important than accomplishing tasks. These individuals usually see time in a more holistic manner; in other words, many events may happen at once. Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are places where the polychronic orientation prevails.
In certain cities in the U.S., it is not uncommon for us to find timetables or daily schedules for buses or trains. If the bus is to be at a certain stop at 10:09 PM, for example, one can expect that to happen at the designated time, give or take a minute.
For polychronic individuals such precise timetables are mind-boggling, as many of them are simply used to going to the bus stop and waiting – not knowing whether they will be waiting for five or forty-five minutes. That is just the way things are.
This difference in time orientation is reflected in the complaints of U.S. business people conducting business in Saudi Arabia or in Mexico, for example. A big source of frustration for them is the difficulty of getting through a meeting’s agenda. That is because in these countries meetings begin with an extended socializing time in which time is spent establishing social rapport – usually over many cups of coffee or tea.

The context of communication

This dimension has to do with the way people communicate with each other. Some cultures value a high context communication style while others value a low context style.
In high context cultures, information is either in the physical context or internalized in the person. Behavioral rules are implicit; in other words, the context is supposed to give you the cues you need to behave appropriately. In these cultures, members tend to use a more indirect style of communication. Examples of societies that value this communication style include Japan, Korea, China, and many of the Latin American countries.
In low context cultures, information is part of and conveyed through the verbal content of the communication. The rules and expectations are explained and discussed; individuals tend to prefer a more direct communication style. Examples of countries that would prefer this communication style include the United States and most European countries.
In the U.S., for example, it is very common for college students to receive a course syllabus at the beginning of the semester. In it, students find detailed information such as the course description and learning objectives. It is not uncommon for the syllabus to also provide the instructor’s policies regarding attendance, course assignments, course preparation, how grades will be determined, and even a tentative course schedule. That is because, in a low context culture such as the U.S., expectations are often communicated directly to the individual. In a high context culture, students may not be given all this information directly. As a student, it is your job to find out what the rules and expectations are.
Need another example? A quick look around campus will reveal signs such as the one at left.
In high context cultures, this type of information is less likely to be displayed. There is no need for them to post a sign telling you to clean up after yourself. The expectation is that you should know what to do in situations like this.
Given the differences between high context and low context individuals, can you think of other potential sources of conflict or misunderstanding between them?

Individualism versus Collectivism

This cultural dimension is concerned with the extent to which the welfare of the individual or that of the group is more valued in a society.
In individualistic societies, the goals of individuals are valued more highly than the goals of the group. Individuals are rewarded for behaving independently, making their own plans, and working toward achieving their personal goals. In these societies, individuals are hired and promoted largely based on individual achievement and qualifications. Examples of individualistic societies include the United States and Northern and Western European countries.
In collectivistic societies, on the other hand, the needs of the group are considered more important than those of the individual. In these societies, kinship ties are much stronger and may take precedence over expertise in matters of appointments and promotions. Collectivism is a value in Asian, African, as well as South American cultures.
Take, for example, the case of arranged marriages, still common in countries such as India or Pakistan. In those cultures, marriages are times to form family alliances. You marry whomever your family chooses or whoever is best for the family. In the U.S., on the other hand, you marry whomever you choose, the implication being that it’s your decision and you choose the one best for you. In this case, the welfare of the individual takes precedence over the welfare of the family. The same can happen in your professional life. A student from a collectivistic culture may be sent to the U.S. to study whatever his/her government or company needs and not necessarily what he/she wants to pursue; whatever the group needs (i.e., country or company) takes precedence over what the individual wants.
Given the differences between individualistic and collectivistic individuals, can you think of potential sources of conflict or misunderstanding between them?

Differences in value orientation or “cultural baggage”

When you visit another country, you take along a lot more than what is in your suitcase. You will also be carrying your “cultural baggage”.
Your cultural baggage (or culture) is the collection of all the values, beliefs, concepts, and behaviors that you learned as a child and that will have a great effect on the way you see the world. Keep in mind that your cultural baggage is unique and will most certainly differ from that carried by members of your host culture.
Cultures vary in many ways; we have discussed just a few of those ways. It’s important that you realize, though, that the cultural dimensions presented here do not apply to all individuals within a culture. An individual’s behavior may also vary depending on the situation. In other words, treat the differences discussed here as general guidelines and understand that there will always be individuals who don’t fit the dimensions discussed here.

MMR2011 = Mexico Missionary Retreat 2011

Every November for the last 8 years we have been blessed in being able to see brothers and sisters come together for a retreat in Mexico. I do not know all the information of when this type of retreat started here in Mexico, but I am glad that it did. For the second time it was our turn to organize it so we decided to retreat in Ixtapa at a hotel for three days. The time to come together was a blessing this year because we saw people come from Guadalajara, Mexico City, Toluca, Leon, Cuernavaca, Lazaro Cardenas and Morelia Mexico. We had hoped even more missionaries and workers in other parts of Mexico would come, publishing the information in Facebook and blogs and we hope that the next one will see even more workers in Mexico coming together to renew.

It is important to make a note that we did not just go to the beach for three days, although that is obviously part of it. It was a time to reconnect with one-another, revive our spiritual disciplines and walk with God, and to renew are visions in the extended work we do all over Mexico. Many times mission work is a stressful situation, constantly dealing with problems and people and their different lives. We praise God for bringing 30+ adults and 15 children together.

One of the best things in the retreat is to see the children playing together and being with other third-culture kids that can understand each other. Also, the AIM students always bring a helpful curve to the mix and we all have a chance to get to know each other and our ministries better, praying for each other and listening to each other in love.

The topic this year we planned was “Holy Conversation” with four sessions:

Gathering - The holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Facilitated by Sam Gonzalez.

Word - God speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and in song. Facilitated by Cory Burns

Meal - God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. Facilitated by Tim Rush

Sending - God blesses us and sends us in missions to the world. Facilitated by James Henderson

We were really blessed to have good conversations and although some people may not have fully appreciated the topics it was a wonderful time for many of us to focus on how we can keep on working and doing the best to use our talents that God has given us and continue to work after many years of doing so.

The Lord is working in Mexico mightily and in many ways, liberating people from their sinfulness and social injustice is being righted. Church plants are being made and renewed, AIM students are being mentored, missionary kids are growing up and marriages are being nurtured. All this is done because so many people like you supporters and family that make it all possible, so we thank you and ask that you continue to pray for all the missionaries. Some are planning their move finishing time and others are starting new works, with many in-between. We thank you and pray also that God is blessing and using you in many ways.

Diversity of Leaders

Peruvian Theologian Gustavo Gutierrez once said:

“Charity is today a 'political charity.'. . . it means the transformation of a society structured to benefit a few who appropriate to themselves the value of the work of others. This transformation ought to be directed toward a radical change in the foundation of society, that is, the private ownership of the means of production.”

His life was filled with statements identifying the need for our worldview of theology to move to a more social movement. Liberation theology has its roots in Latin America. We know that without a presence in the world the church would not be a light in the midst of darkness. For us here in Leon we have seen many attempts to reach the society by doing ministry among different people’s groups. But little success is found when we use the church as our flagship.
Manolo and Luis have done an amazing job reaching communities with some psychological and social approaches. In other words these men’s careers have created a place of ministry without using church roles to get there. This radical approach to ministry may be already in place in other countries, but for us in Mexico is new and is a great time to grow.
We know also of other men who have done foundations to help others. Gerardo Garcia Sandozequi is a great example of this. Gerardo’s Foundation La Esperanza is a great example. (http://www.lafundacionesperanza.org) How can we be light to those on the fringes of society?

According to Gutierrez this has to be a “radical change” in our society. And I have to agree that if our approach to leadership would include this type of ministry then our results would be better. I am not saying that theology and missions are limited to them in the social sciences. But the realization that American Churches cannot provide a salary for each minister in the world is real. And our Mexican churches have struggled with giving. So professional ministers are not part of the fabric of church. New ideas of incarnating Christ in the world have to raise from within the church. Manolo will be starting a new Foundation next year. And we are glad to be part of this new development.
Every first Tuesday of the Month we have taken our AIMers, and some other help, to be a presence in these communities where Manolo leads socially. WE have seen the presence of our service to touch people’s lives. After years of work we are starting to see small groups of people come to realize the need of Jesus. People know we care, so they ask why? And only in this time is when we can share our Lord with them. It is not the only way, but it is one powerful way.
In addition to this Gutierrez has said:

“The unqualified affirmation of the universal will of salvation has radically changed the way of conceiving the mission of the Church in the world. . . . The work of salvation is a reality which occurs in history.”

Our desire is to be more present in the city of Leon. For years we have been part of the city of Leon. We have seen many people come to the knowledge of Jesus. But when we reach one, thousands are born, the city outstretches for miles. After taking some time for leadership we are discouraged to see that our elders, teachers, and prophets are not enough. We must diversify the multitude of gifts in the Mexican Church. God is amazing, and if we would ask as the prophet Habakkuk did, God may answer that something worse is on the way. Our faith needs to be challenged. If what we preach is the truth, then it will be light no matter where we take it.

Mike Breen: Why The Missional Movement Will Fail

It’s time we start being brutally honest about the missional movement that has emerged in the last 10-15 years: Chances are better than not it’s going to fail.
That may seem cynical, but I’m being realistic. There is a reason so many movements in the Western church have failed in the past century: They are a car without an engine. A missional church or a missional community or a missional small group is the new car that everyone is talking about right now, but no matter how beautiful or shiny the vehicle, without an engine, it won’t go anywhere.

The Engine of the Church

So what is the engine of the church? Discipleship. I’ve said it many times: If you make disciples, you will always get the church. But if you try to build the church, you will rarely get disciples.

If you’re good at making disciples, you’ll get more leaders than you’ll know what to do with. If you make disciples like Jesus made them, you’ll see people come to faith who didn’t know Him. If you disciple people well, you will always get the missional thing.
Always.
We took 30 days and examined the Twitter conversations happening. We discovered there are between 100-150 times as many people talking about mission as there are discipleship (to be clear, that’s a 100:1). We are a group of people addicted to and obsessed with the work of the Kingdom, with little to no idea how to be with the King.
As Skye Jethani wrote in his Out of Ur post a little while back “Has Mission become an Idol?”:

“Many church leaders unknowingly replace the transcendent vitality of a life with God for the ego satisfaction they derive from a life for God.”

Look, I’m not criticizing the people who are passionate about mission…I am one of those people. I was one of the people pioneering Missional Communities in the 1980′s and have been doing it ever since. This is my camp, my tribe, my people. But it has to be said: God did not design us to do Kingdom mission outside of the scope of intentional, biblical discipleship and if we don’t see that, we’re fooling ourselves.

Mission Is The Umbrella of Discipleship

Mission is under the umbrella of discipleship as it is one of the many things that Jesus taught his disciples to do well. But it wasn’t done in a vacuum outside of knowing God and being shaped by that relationship, where a constant refinement of their character was happening alongside of their continued skill development (which included mission).
The truth about discipleship is that it’s never hip and it’s never in style…it’s the call to come and die; a “long obedience in the same direction.” While the “missional” conversation is imbued with the energy and vitality that comes with kingdom work, it seems to be missing some of the hallmark reality that those of us who have lived it over time have come to expect: Mission is messy. It’s humbling. There’s often no glory in it. It’s for the long haul. And it’s completely unsustainable without discipleship.
This is the crux of it: The reason the missional movement may fail is because most people/communities in the Western church are pretty bad at making disciples. Without a plan for making disciples (and a plan that works), any missional thing you launch will be completely unsustainable.

Mission Is A War Zone

Think about it this way: Sending people out to do mission is to send them out to a war zone. Discipleship is not only the boot camp to train them for the front lines, but the hospital when they get wounded and the off-duty time they need to rest and recuperate. When we don’t disciple people the way Jesus and the New Testament talked about, we are sending them out without armor, weapons or training. This is mass carnage waiting to happen. How can we be surprised that people burn out, quit and never want to return to the missional life (or the church)? How can we not expect people will feel used and abused?
There’s a story from World War II where The Red (Russian) Army sent wave after wave of untrained, practically weaponless soldiers into the thick of the German front. They were slaughtered in droves. Why did they do this? Because they knew that eventually the German soldiers would run out of ammunition, creating an opportunity for the Red Army to send in their best soldiers to finish them off. The first wave of untrained soldiers were the best way of exhausting ammunition, leaving their enemy vulnerable.
While this isn’t a perfect analogy, I sense this is a bit like the missional movement right now. We are sending bright-eyed civilians into the battle where the fighting is fiercest without the equipping they need, not just to survive, but to fight well and advance the Kingdom of their dad, the King.

Mission Devoid of Discipleship = Failure

The missional movement will fail because, by-and-large, we are having a discussion about mission devoid of discipleship. Unless we start having more discussion about discipleship and how we make missionaries out of disciples, this movement will stall and fade. Any discussion about mission must begin with discipleship. If your church community is not yet competent at making disciples who can make disciples, please don’t send your members out on mission until you have a growing sense of confidence in your ability to train, equip and disciple them.
Here are some questions I have leaders I’m working with ask regularly:

Am I a disciple?

Do I know how to disciple people who can then disciple people who then disciple people, etc? (i.e. does my discipleship plan work?)

Does our discipleship plan naturally lead all disciples to become missionaries? (not just the elite, Delta-seal missional ninjas)

Leadership begins with being a Christian

The Lord blessed us with a great week-end. WE had prepared for this time for some months now, and we had some mixed responses. The purpose of the event was to motivate and create conversations about leadership in the church. We invited many people from many churches, but only three churches were present: Leon Sur, Juventino Rosas, and La Libertad. Our invited guess was Jose & Maria Palafox from the El Colli church in Zapopan. He has lead the church locally, regionally and nationally for more then 22 years. His approach to ministry, and especially the need for model leadership was encouraging. The message was from scripture in the first letter to the Thessalonians with highlights from Jesus narratives. Jose Palafox charged us all to be better models in Christ to be, like Paul, good leaders. Also, we shared this during our Sunday Worship.

The work being done in our churches for years now has been focused in evangelism. Campaigns are done to bring people to the church. But after almost 60+ years of the church of Christ being present in Mexico the need for leadership is vital if we believe the church to survive. Our churches are filled with professionals, capable people willing to lead and work in the kingdom. But we have limited them in being preachers only limiting the diversity of gifts given by the Spirit. The need for writers, teachers, apostles, administrators, founders of schools, foundations, non-profits, etc are lacking. This is not to say that they exist in Mexico, it is only to mention that our Churches of Christ need to be willing to be different in our approach to ministry. And only by having time to discuss our duties, passions, and all, we will be a more adapt church to the spirit of the age.

Top ten reasons and implications of leadership in my context.

1. Church is not outside of any contexts, we need to realize that context is circumstantial

2. Pay attention to meaning to others in their terms

Recently I have been talking with some leaders about the need to restructure the work being done in church. People need to seek God the Leader to start with him, and end with him. He is our ultimate example of Leadership. And it is incarnated in Jesus, so we can live like him in his Spirit.
Mexican churches are described in law as "religious associations" and must be registered with the Interior Secretariat. Restrictions have been set on what churches and their clergy can say or do with regard to politics. The fact that the overwhelming majority of Mexicans are Catholics has led to complaints from Protestant leaders that they are ignored or misunderstood.

Government figures report 97% of 85 million Mexicans over the age of 5 are Catholic. The country's total population is about 100 million.

The role of churches in Mexico's political life has been controversial throughout the country's history. Constitutional reforms in 1857 saw church property expropriated by the government.

In the wake of the Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910 and was still being fought nearly 20 years later in some parts of the country, the new national government imposed more restrictions on clergy and on the activity of the church.

We must pray for our part in the kingdom.

By the Grace of God we are serving his people in Leon. We praise the Lord for our partnership with Jay Tumlinson and the Cameron Church Of Christ. In addition to many individuals and families that make the sacrifice and love us for us to continue to be here.

Life has increased in cost everywhere, 10 to 15% everywhere and the Mexican government predicts that it will go up to 30% by the end of the year.

Our prayer is that we will continue to be able to do ministry in Mexico under whatever circumstances. We have struggled with income this year and we would like for you to know that since this is time to do buggets and plans for next year, we are willing to discuss anything you would like to know in order to continue to support us next year or start support.

On the other hand, we would like to thank you for always reading our reports and posts. We want to remind you that we have a website for further information and pictures.

Also, we would love to see you if you want to make plans to visit us and see the church.

Recently at church we have seen that the members are encouraged, and working hard on their own spiritual walk. They are also extremely excited about working together to be more unified. We see more excitement in their own desire to grow. Our elders are stepping up and working harder at leadership. They are learning and it has been very good for them and the congregation.

Although we wish we could see more youth events happen, we are still praying that leadership for youth will be raised in the next year. We know that the Lord of Harvest will raise more leaders we need.

This week we plan to have another leadership seminar with special guests, my parents, Jose and Maria Palafox. A few churches in the surrounding area and their leaders are coming so we are excited about getting to know them better.

Our family continues to do well. The kids are doing great in school and growing. We hope to see them continue this school year with as much excitement and growth. Once again I am in charge of our retreat for the Mexico missionaries this year and it will be taking place in Xtapa with six or seven different areas in Mexico being represented with all the missionaries that are coming. We will be sharing "Holy Conversation." Churches in Mexico have grown and continual leadership is needed and for this reason it is so important for us as local missionaries to continue to work and learn from each other, spending time together.

Please continue to pray for our growth, small groups, and continue growth of the area churches. We know that you are continuing to sacrifice for us to be here and we are very appreciative of that.

In the last days we have taken the time to step away from ministry in a form of 'watching' what the Leon Sur Church will become. And it is interesting to see what people are capable of doing when placed in a stressful situation. Not to say that we are placing that stress on them, but it is not placed on us either. For almost one year the church has been led by the three elders and their wives. God has helped in bringing deacons to help them guide the church in worship, education, lady's ministries, children, youth, etc. We have seen a huge amount of growth in our members to the likeness of Christ. Over 80% of our members are active in one form or another of ministry. The administration of the church is taking a more Mexican approach with they way cleaning the building, classrooms, fellowship meals, and everything else. But I ask: Why do people leave church?
The only part in which we have left our participation active in church has been the face to face interaction with one on one relationships. In this way of doing ministry we have seen how people love Christ but not his church. People are committed to the teachings of Jesus, but not to the people who claim to have these teachings. In soteriology and theology we know that it is sin that drives these reactions. But can we make a difference?
The church is about to lose three strong families. These are struggling with issues which are not even related to the church. In other words it is sin and struggles they have in the worlds which they interact. They have lied, robed, and other sins with those whom they work with, live with or go to school with. So their solution is to stop being in the church. Our three shepherds have done a remarkable role in assisting them, loving them, and keeping the rest of the church involved. I have read that it is more often amazing that the most attention and fussed over, are the members who might drop out faster than others.
WE have seen these to be the main reasons: Others, time, boredom, weakness, family, and, unexpectedly, God. Members are always accusing the church of lacking something, or needing some improvement. But they do not place themselves as a solution either. I have always said that the most important test to spiritual giftedness is what you dislike in church. If you dislike some ministry that is being done or is not done at all then that is your spiritual giftedness. It is for this reason that you notice the need. For example, a lady one day told me to start a new ministry for women. I told her, she was the new minster assigned to do it. Next week, she stopped coming. I had baptized her, given her money, time, effort, and more. We knew her for a couple of years. The church accepted her with her sins, struggles, etc. Jesus said: “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? - in all respect I have felt this way for some time now. How long must I stay with someone? We are Jesus to them, we are that church which is his body right?

I know that this week is merely but a snap shot of what many churches struggle with, we are a church that deals with these matters publicly. The community of faith must interact in prayer, fasting, and interceding as priest. The church in Leon Sur needs to be what the Spirit leads us to be in the future. Many families are coming and going, people move and use us for their benefits. But we know God is glorified in our labor. It is the call of the church to endure and persevere. These families leaving us will come back with more struggles than when they left us in the first place. We have seen ladies leave alone, and come back with new babies from sinful relationships, drug additions, money struggles, debt, divorce, immorality, etc...

Keep us in prayer. As these last months of 2011 come quick the church needs to re-dream, reconnect, and reunite because consumerism, individualism, egocentrism, immaturity, and, not having a Christ-center life will always keep people revolving in our doors.

Edgar Baptized

The Lord is working in Leon Sur and her members. The church has endured in the last months a radical change from missionary care to the transition of Mexican Leadership. It was a ride to see how the Spirit appointed elders. These three men and their wives have wrestled with the facts, sins, and all that involves leading the congregation. The church is alive and working with deacons, teachers, and some prophets. It is not easy to be an observer. But we have seen the Lord raise leadership within the members. In addition to the elders we have seen small groups continue to grow. AS well as lady's breakfast, time to share one on one, and Sunday morning worship.

This last Friday during one of the small groups Edgar decided to be immersed into Christ. He has been coming to church with his mother, Maru. She is a single mother who has struggled to staying a float with all the problems we know are obvious. Edgar is a good young man who has struggled with some sins which we know the Lord is at work. WE praise God for Arturo's leadership to disciple him with his evangelistic fervor.

Our prayer is that these men and women of God will continue to share the greatness of the kingdom with others. Small Groups have been a place where intimacy could be used to bring others to the Lord. Gloria has opend her home and pool weekly. WE thank God for this labor.

We praise God for what is being done in Mexico as a result of many missionaries who have lead the way to bring new churches. These have been great tools in the kingdom. Not only here in Leon, but in the rest of Mexico, and the world. Many people have given time, money, efforts, etc...we know that these are not in vain. There is a call we all have received to be in the mission of God. And as we start to see the maturity of Leon Sur increase we need to stay close to them. And rejoice when these produce fruit. But also in those moments when we meet and discuss differences. All these are not posted in the blog. You know they happen. But we pray for the Spirit to continue to build his church.

TUESDAY at Cañada

Once a month on a Tuesday we will be going to la Cañada to help and serve during their community time. This time we are asked to take the AIMers to teach for about one hour. This week we took the time to share about communication and its uses. WE started with a name game, some card game to share about confusion, and the girls did some crafts. At the end we had time to share some snacks Nick provided. IT was a blessing to be there. In all we had over 30 kids, and some parents. WE shared bibles and prayer bracelets to pray for Mexico. Our goal is to share about the love Jesus has for all of us. And we know that seeds have been planted, and one day the Lord will be glorified.

Manolo Rosas has been a great leader in the community. His help has prompted not only the time with Cañada, but as the administrator of the church has done amazing work with the elders. Without him the church's leaders would not be where they are spiritually. The Spirit has provided a great helper for us. And we hope that we will implement more help from the church in Leon Sur. Once the AIMers depart this end of 2011 we will be needing some additional help. Pray to the Lord of harvest for more workers.

Healthy communities

In the last years we have been blessed to work with a small community in La Cañada here in Leon. Manolo is the Sociologist who has taken us under their new way of doing community. See for many years people have moved forward to making homes, and not providing a healthy community. Especially those who are most needed. Small, tiny, apartments are built and sold to people who struggle to be a community with those around. So there is much graffiti, violence, and struggle. Sociologist and Spiritual leaders have started a conversation to see that there is a need for a spiritual influence to make healthier communities. And that is what the AIMers as well as our church has participated. In others posts we have served, loved, taught, and even prayed with people in La Cañada.

This Thursday night we had the blessing of participating with them in a seminar. Luis Rosas is a lecturer who has a background in psychology and counseling. And is a member at our church. He recently move to Leon and we have started to partner in discipleship with him. Although his personal struggles are many, we know he is a tool in God's kingdom. His presentation was a very interesting one. It was focused in being more holistic in the way construction, sales, and all the related to community. Challenges are always part of being with people. We know sins are struggles are part of church work. Can you imagine a community without Jesus?

As time moves forward we intend to see a group of disciples raise from this community. The Lord has taken many of our members to be participants in this area. WE know that the seeds have been planted among the kids, parents, and teens. Manolo and Luis are great leaders who incarnate Jesus in places where they have to be. We praise God for their efforts.

New Latin Flavor to Leadership

In this last week-end me and my wife traveled to Mexico City. It was a time to share with some leaders about Jesus, and his church. The Lord blessed us to be in the Pink House with the Rocha family, the Molina family, and some other fifty people for a great seminar. As I stood in the front speaking of a Limitless Church I realized that they were all Mexicans! You may think that is weird because I was in the largest city with the most Mexicans in the world. But see many years we have been blessed to have missionaries come from Europe, Canada, and USA. But can it be now that the church is growing national leadership? WE pray it is.

See, I understand the process God has used in partnerships with many churches. And to an extend they still have involvement. But we had five churches represented from the city. And my message was bold and challenging. Using the letter to the Ephesians we took a good look at our position as a church before the cosmic Jesus; and we added the huge responsibility left for us to follow in our lives in holiness. Our prayer is that many people will be stepping up to do their part as they are gifted by the Spirit to be Christ in Mexico. WE have many people who needed to be challenged, people who had been there since the beginning of the church in D.F. I know that some may never see me again. And may be they will be moved to action because of the word presented. But I was excited to see the response. We had repentance, acceptance, and some reflection in the future of the church in Mexico.

After the seminar I was blessed by Lalo Rocha to go and see a soccer game, and it was a great time to know each other better, and to see that God has brought a strong leader to the Capital City. I found a new good friend. They loved us, took care of us, and we had fun. Next Sunday I preached in the Metro Church and some other people came to see what we had to say. It was a blessed time for me to be able to speak to great men, and women. Our AIMers went with us and helped with the little ones. They had a great time preparing, and loving the kids. They are great missionaries. !

In short, the church of Mexico has to raise Leaders and give us an opportunity to grow in wisdom and purpose. Pray for the Metro church, the Tierra Firme church with Israel Molina, and others in D.F. who are struggling to make disciples of all nations.

Service to the Community

On SAT we were invited to participate with La Cañada Real community. In this community there are many new exciting aspects being played. The main idea is to create and promote apartments for sale, but also implement a social aspect of relationships, family, values, and by doing this make a better place to live. Since its beginnings a few years ago, the church Leon Sur as well as the AIMers have played a role in helping accomplish this.

In this time we had the blessing in helping families have some fun with each other. In all we had over 100 people come to play games, races, competitions, and music. A new development has been the addition to the community of Luis. He is a Manolo's brother who just came to Leon from Texas to live with us. He has been a blessing to the congregation, and we know La Cañada is too. We know he is struggling with some issues, but the Lord is blessing him. His leadership was key this Saturday. And we are glad to have seen the the Bakers, and AIMers participate too. Each of us took some time to help while it rained but it was worth it.

We pray one day to see a small church be planted in this community. But it has taken some time to see people know us, and trust God. Please pray for the work being done here. And as you may expect there are several ministries done all at once. WE have maturing, nurturing, forgiving, serving, etc...truly only God is able to do all these with broken people.

Relationships are growing

On Sunday we had some special time celebrating Nick and Jazmin for their birthdays. It was a good time eating together. After church we headed to a small plaza to eat with Nick, and later that night at 7 we met at the church to celebrate Jazamin Rubio. What is interesting is the dynamic in people's relationships. People at Leon Sur are becoming better friends. Families are starting to be good friends and relationships are being built.

Eight years ago, almost all of the people which came together did not know each other. We were all in our own worlds. But now they have come together sharing moments like these. WE know it is not just coincidence. Christ living in them by his Spirit creates good relationships. Our prayer is that in the future we can have more moments similar to Sunday.

On a different note. Our Sunday was a good one. Membership continues to be around high eighties and Mexican leadership is growing. WE praise God for Felipe and Jorge being in-charge of our worship. Ivan and Manolo have done some good choices in out administration, Arturo, Roberto, and Martin have shepherd the flock well; Lupita, Marta, Fernanda, Jazmin, Ben, are great teachers. We praise God for the building of the church in Leon. Although we are in the stage of watching we see that much needs to be changed. But our prayer is that the Lord of harvest will raise men and women who are able to use their gifts properly. Pray with us.

GRAN TARDE DEL GRITO / GREAT AFTERNOON CELEBRATING

In history we learn that every nation believes God works only in their behalf. But can really God all creator be a nationalistic deity? I think the Lord is more concerned about the individual not nations, states, or power figures. God does place people to lead for this same purpose. With this in mind, we celebrated the 201 Anniversary of Mexican Independence. It is a time of patriotism and honoring what others have done for the liberty of the oppressors. (only to place us under a different ruler!)

But the point is not political or national. The idea is that three young ladies at church decided to lead this celebration. They organized all, and prepared people to bring and share food, time, decorations, etc. WE had some good game, singing, and even some costumes. God is great with those who love to serve and love others.

Although the congregation still at a young stage of their growth, we are limited in what people are willing to sacrifice for others. In other words the church still has much to learn in serving one another, cleaning after the event, and having humility. But we praise God for moments where we can see grace and mercy be extended.

The celebration was a place that visitors and others took place in the food, time, and games. WE hope that in the midst of our immaturities we can glorify God with our service, and evangelism.

I pray that God will rein in Mexico and the world.

Please pray for these individuals by name. They are part of our community here in Leon Sur, and we pray that the church will mature, grow, and learn how to love one another. Also, keep in mind about 30 people who are not with us anymore. Either by death, moving away, or simply not being faithful to the community. Our prayers are with them too.

Adaptation is crucial

The Catholic Encyclopedia defines disciple as a: This term is commonly applied to one who is learning any art or science from one distinguished by his accomplishments. Though derived from the Latin discipulus, the English name conveys a meaning somewhat narrower than its Latin equivalent: disciple is opposed to master, as scholar to teacher, whilst both disciple and scholar are included under the Latin discipulus. AIMers are disciples. WE have had a roller coaster relationship with the AIM program since our own adventure in 1995. The Lord has blessed us in many ways with many people working here. Some have been great learners while others struggled with immaturity. Although it has been a sweet and sour time, we see the Spirit making disciples in AIM. It has been said that in the Churches of Christ we have never seen a bigger impact in mission work in Mexico than the AIMers. It is clear that not all of them are in this category. Sadly some have traveled for fun, vacation, learning a language later they will forget, and maybe others were just looking for a mate. But the Lord has raised many who have committed to the work of the church in Mexico, planted churches, married Mexicans, and more. Truly an adventure. They learned what it takes to learn from others' accomplishments.
As a coordinator I can say that it was never my intention to be one. I was lead to this place by God under circumstances that are part of history now. My wife and I have loved working with the program. We have built relationships with some, and others were just a small part of what we do in Leon. This 2011 we will NOT be asking for AIMers anymore. It is time for the work in Leon to be left to the church in Leon Sur, and libertad to do what they need to do alone. Also, we have seen that we are distant from the generation of young men and women entering the program. Few are willing to sustain students coming into their lives for a while depending on them for so much direction. The time spent and money spent as a coordinator is taxing. WE pray that the Lord will raise others for this ministry. After 16 years of ministry with AIM we are retiring. WE praise God for what he gave us through his will.
Tonight one of our AIMers is in the hospital sick, others are getting ready to teach and preach tomorrow in church, others are resting from a long week of cooking, serving, visiting, teaching in cells, giving to the needy, working with children's homes, and more. But it will come to an end this December.

It will be a crucial end to what we have considered the Missionary Leon Team. After December the church in Leon will be left to do what they desire under the elders, teachers, deacons, etc. The youth will miss the leadership of men and women from AIM, they will miss their giving, serving, and loving. For us, we will be freer from stress, less worries, and of course a little sad. But all good things come to an end.
I understand that it is a few months from now but we need to start preparing for their exit strategies, plans, and preparations. It is possible one or two AIMers will stay for a month more or so. But it will never be the same. The time to see missionaries in Leon is coming to an end. Our commitment until 2014 is still strong. We desire to see the leadership, women, youth, and more come to better equip, empower, and built in the mission of God. What will happen to us in 2014 is not clear. We will be serving our King. And we pray that for his Glory.

Most Fridays the AIMers come over the house for a small lesson at noon, then they stay for lunch and some games, TV, movies, etc. So we are mostly busy with them. But this week we were asked to host the Lady's from church which meet on Friday nights for a cooking-bible class. Since Tana does not attend most of these they figured that they could come to Tana. So we combined both ministries.

It was a blessing to bring together Princeton's background to teach the ladies Indian food. He prepared with Tana great rice, butter chicken, dessert, and tea. In total we had eight ladies. We had the blessing in having our neighbor and her Daughter visit since Tana invited them.

Sadly, we have to report that during this time of ministry we had a small trouble with Dani's health. She is fine but Jeni had to take her of her while we went back and forth helping them and the cooking. We know that the Lord is great, but in times like these we are reminded that chaos, and change are inevitable.

We are glad to see that the ladies from Leon Sur continue to meet and fellowship cooking and sharing God's word. And as times comes to an end with the AIMers in Leon we enjoy classes with them. Even though it may be not real to them.

This week was a fast moving week, and we hope to be able to train ourselves to be flexible and willing to adapt to what the Spirit is calling us.

The Lord does prune

Tonight we got back from visiting our family in Guadalajara. And it was a blessing to see them after being done in the States for a small while. The trip was a blessing, but swift. Dani, an AIMer, went with us for the two day trip. Our kids love seeing AIMers part of our lives. But in the midst of all these things in which we are blessed we are forced to make tough choices.

About two months ago, we announced that the work started in the city of Silao was stopped for several reasons. And now we want to announce that the work being done in the city of Tequila is also cancelled. The Velasco Family did a great job working for almost a year. The church in Zapopan supported them, helped, and even saw almost 15 to 17 people gather every week on Sundays. Too many factors are part of the decision. But we pray that the Lord will raise leaders from within this small body to continue by themselves.

Although we are not happy to report this. The Lord does prune his body. And we are aware that it is not a failure of any form. Please pray for the church in Tequila, and the continual work in this city done by the local church.

Also, we need to keep in mind that the Lord has made us part of ministries in different places, and we feel unable to do it all. Including Leon Sur Church of Christ. So pray for us.

Being in close contact with my parents and the work we do together has been a key component for our time in Mexico. WE praise God for what he is doing, and we thank him for peace about the future.

In America there is a saying that if Life gives you lemons....make lemonade. So we have taken this practice with our Guava (Guayaba in Spanish) tree at home. We have collected so much fruit that we are using these gifts from God to make relationships grow. See, about a month or so ago we got robbed at our house. We had an upsetting time. But we realized that 15 houses in our area had been robbed. So we are part of the fabric in Leon! God blessed us to begin a new relationship with our neighbors. We have met people in the street we did not now before. And the best way to follow-up with the visits has been the gifts of Guavas. Tana and I have taken some time to know people and see that God is amazing to give us love and sustainability from the ground. Can we really be this close to evil that we do not recognize that God is able to do more then we ask or imagine?

With this in mind, let me take the time to confess a little. We are exhausted. God has brought us much ministry and work. The provision and care has been far beyond what we were expecting. Only God can do this. So after our long summer trip we had planned a Men's retreat camping. WE invited some churches and friends to join. But timing, money, and other issues made it not possible to do. It was disappointing, and frustrating. Only six or seven men were able to go. These are great men, but it was not the purpose of the retreat.

The Church in Mexico is desperately needing men's leadership. If God would come at this moment many of us would be found lacking. ("Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin,") It is pressing that we take time to retreat and see other men from other congregations to understand how God is at work. Our intent has always been to make the church a Mexican Church with all the culture awareness. Three of our elders in Leon Sur are not enough to make a difference in the work. Transformation and leadership is desired, but not achieved.

We want to remember that if we take time to see the fruits produced by God we will reap the spiritual guavas to see Christ glorified. For this reason I sit here with my family ready to watch a movie instead of being on a retreat camping in the rain. The growth is done by God. The work of the farmer is to be patient.

Crazy Summer

Thank you all for the help. Today we are getting back to the normal schedule. The kids started school and we are blessed to see the church grow.

This Sunday we rejoiced watching the members take leadership to encourage others in worshiping God. Although we see some needed growth, we expect this 2011 and what is remaining to be a good one.

We are back this week from a long trip. It all started from Leon and after a huge circle of 3,000 or so miles, we are back in Leon. We were able to see Omar's parents in Guadalajara, drive up the coast of Mexico and cross in Nogales to spend time with Tana's parents in Tucson, AZ. Then we crossed to Texas and it was a blessing to see the Gary family and Omar took a class at ACU.
God gave us the time, money and preparation to work on the car and have it "road-ready" with tires, recalls fixed and all the regular maintenance done. Also the tags and registration renewed. We hope that we should be fine with this car the next few years. The only surprise was that the have changed the vehicle visa and now we have to leave a deposit of 300 dollars to bring the car into Mexico. God again was working and we were able to cover this.

We especially would like to mention how God blessed us through our family in Arizona. It was good to see Tana's grandpa healing and everyone else there. They all showered us with gifts and love as family does. Emma and Maicah were blessed to be with cousins, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles.
After leaving Arizona, we drove to Texas for Omar to go to his class in Abilene. Tana and the kids were blessed to be with the Gary family in Knott and spend more good time with cousins and Aunt and uncle. They had fun swimming, eating, and going to Lubbock and to Lamesa to the drive in. We were all blessed by their hospitality.
I have been really blessed to be given the opportunity to attend ACU, although I thought I was done with school, there is always a lot to learn. I was in a spiritual formation class with 33+ students from different places like Chicago, L.A., Atlanta, Ecuador and Mexico. We were able to see Venicio and Rachel Montesdeoca. Venicio is an old friend from Ecuador and his wife and baby. We had lunch with them and had a great time. We also were able to see our friends Jason and Karla Craddock who live in Abilene.

We drove back on Friday night and Saturday from Laredo back to Leon. We had a safe trip, lots of people traveling also. On Sunday we were back at Leon Sur, and it was good to see everyone and be back home.

We look forward to starting this new era with the church. We have lots of plans with classes, small groups and special retreats like our yearly men's leadership retreat this weekend. We are looking forward to starting a new fall after a crazy summer. We ask for your prayers and guidence as we decide about AIMers, leadership, elders, and family.
We want to especially thank Pete and Tammie Baker, Mary Alice Gonzalez, and the Cameron Church of Christ with everyone there who has supported us and loved us with all we do in making disciples here in Leon.

A Word from the AIM Program!

Hello there,

I hope this finds you doing well. Things are moving right along here in Lubbock! This has been a crazy summer. It has been the worst drought in Lubbock’s recorded history as well as breaking the record for the most days over 100 degrees! I guess that makes a good impression on new students when they arrive here, especially from places that have water and mountains!

We officially have 49 AIM students in this class. They are from 15 States as well as Mexico, Brazil, Peru and Trinidad/Tobago. That should make for a very interesting and fun class. We also have almost two-thirds girls in this class. They are in the middle of their second week and so far our impressions are very good. This class has a great personality and I already can’t wait to show them off on all the trips we take.

This is also the first year that Ed Wharton is no longer teaching the AIM class his Christian Evidences course. Kevin Haynes is now teaching that class. Ed said he just doesn’t have the energy that he used to so he is having to slowly let go of things.

Pat and I have spent a lot of the summer remodeling the guys and girls bathrooms in the AIM basement. That may sound like no little thing but at least for me, I have had to learn a whole lot such as how to sheetrock, texturing, taping and mudding, tiling and grouting. The ladies bathroom is really nice looking now. We aren’t yet finished with the guys bathroom but we are making it a “Man’s” bathroom. I have to say it is pretty impressive so far. I imagine we’ll finish it up in a few more weeks.

One interesting challenge we have had this year is a smaller staff. We have about 10 less AIM assistants than we had last year. We do have some new ones who are thinking and planning to jump in this January which will be wonderful. For those who are still thinking about it, just know that we cannot have too many good people around this place!

Please keep us and this new class in your prayers. We do have about 10 who are pretty short on their support. Some are using their own savings and have enough to make it for the first month or two. So, if any of you are looking for someone to help just let me know. Also, if you think your congregation might be interested in helping to support an AIM student just email us.

To the 2010 class, keep walking by faith! You have been on the field long enough to start really experiencing some culture shock, homesickness, irritation with teammates, missionaries, etc. Just remember that you are there for the long run so don’t get sidetracked by those other things. Also remember what you are really there for and make sure you are on target to accomplish that.

To the 2009 class, many of you guys are back already while others are making plans to come home in the next few weeks or months. Coming home is one of the tougher parts of the whole experience. Many have given in to the temptation to float around and not really commit to getting involved and serving any specific congregation. Don’t do that, it makes your adjustment time even longer and the chances will be higher that you go through some negativity that way. You actually need to have the same attitude coming home that you had going to your fields, to just be a humble servant wherever you go. You knew that you would have to adapt to the culture on your field if you were to feel at home and be effective, the same is true coming home!

We think about you a whole lot around here. You really are the heroes!

Seven and counting

Last Sunday was the time to celebrate at Leon Sur Church of Christ. We had the privilege of seeing people come together to honor what God has done among us. The church was in worship with songs, prayers, scripture, and the supper. All three elders spoke to the congregation with an encouraging word, and we were visited by the Gary family. The message spoken by Shawn was geared to making us realize that it is a good time to start thinking about the next thing. What is next for the Iglesia de Cristo Leon Sur? And we hope this was a place to see that for seven yeas many people have made this tree possible to reach out in the society.

Part of the celebration included a meal together. Food was great and plenty. Also, Jay visited from Cameron. WE thank the church in Cameron for making it possible for us to be here. Without them we would not be able to be workers in Mexico. It is a shared honor to participate in the kingdom. God is powerful in the church when we use our spiritual gifts. So thank you Cameron.

The church was blessed in this celebration with some small gifts provided by the members. We made small bags with stickers, book marks, a story of the church, and a small pillow to remember the event. Susana, Gaby, Jazmin, and others were a true blessing. Without the help and love of the ladies this church would not exist either. We praise God for these lady's hearts of generosity.

If we are truthful to what we have planned since the beginning - then we must realize that many, many, many prayers were answered. Thousands of times, we have asked the Lord to reign, And he is among us. There has been sometimes of weakness, struggle, misunderstandings, and more! No one can secure the work of the church and its leaders, elders, teachers, members, etc.

IT was a time to be thankful, to be proud, and to recognize that the Lord is at work. But also to see that there are many more things to do. It challenged me to see that we have not scratched the surface of what needs to happen. If we would work another 7 years we would say the same. So Praise God for what has been done, and we rejoice in his grace to be able to live one more day in this mission of his.

A Word from the missionary: Joy !

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:31-39

MORE THAN CONQUERERS... What does the word Conqueror mean?   Webster says: to gain or acquire by force of arms.   For the Romans, conquering was part of life...they defeated many.   The author of Romans wants the readers of this time to understand something...God’s love and grace is bigger than games... bigger than taking spoils of war... He is telling the reader that God’s love and grace to us is much bigger than just winning the game or taking by force... God doesn’t play games. HE is for us.
    I may be rambling, but this verse has always perturbed me in many ways. When I was a new Christian I thought it meant that I would not be touched by death, destruction, famine, persecution, etc...because God’s protection was all around me. In a sense, He is protecting me. He has conquered sin and death.   We are with the winning team, the biggest nation.
    But, the longer I have looked at this book and discussed it with others, and lived with Christ, I have seen another side to it.   I believe the author is saying that we have conquered death, sin and the like. If God sacrificed his own son to save us, why would we not expect anything less than complete and utter love and salvation to us. When the author says that no present or future powers or darkness will separate us from the love of God, he is not saying we will not suffer on this earth, but that WE WILL NOT BE SEPARATED from him or his love or his grace.   This earth has sin and death...there are many on this planet that do not care, do not love, they are not trying to follow the way of wisdom, but folly: “If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; cast lots with us; we will all share the loot.”   - Proverbs 1: 11-14.
We cannot get away from this world, this type of folly. It will happen to us one day in some way, some problem, some consequence. But Romans is our encourager, our cheerleader....”don’t give up... you have one the race...you are free from sin, part of God and saved by Jesus’ blood.”
God loves us, it is nature, it is why he puts us where we are and why he created us, to find him, to have shelter under his wings and to see that when these things in life hit us, we are more than conquerors, we are saved, perfected and not by our works, but his grace.
This should free us. No matter what takes place to us on this earth, we are not ruled by it, the fear, the tiredness, the pain... It is all nothing...when we see his grace. Romans is not telling us things wont happen, but that when they do, God is there, has always been there.
This past week alone we have had visitors, family, travels, church work, interns, the church in Leon’s 7th anniversary. Through all this is stress with children, money, danger, dealing with evil people full of folly that are willing to steal and hurt. God is with us, his love is ever-present and has a purpose. To keep us close to him. We are blessed to be able to share this message to all and to work for him - through the good and the bad. NOTHING can separate us from God’s love... Read Romans again...understand that NOTHING that happens to us affects what is INSIDE of us....

BLESSINGS

God is great among my family. This last week we have spent some time with Family. My sister and her family, as well as my parents took some time to go to the beach. But in that Sunday before we left the church in Zapopan had a baptism. WE are always blessed with such evangelism done for quite some time now. Hector is a good man who has showed much faith and love for God.

So we praise God for giving us three days of relax time. It was good weather, food, and our kids had a blast. We praise God and ask him to protect us and give us many years with parents.

VBS 2011

This year, the church had not planed a Vacation Bible School. So the AIMers planned a time to share with a small group of kids. The plan was simple: to invite the youth from the church to help and have around 30 kids. And it happened.

Last year the AIMers had been invited to attend a special VBS in Chetumal. And they liked it so much that some of those ideas were used for this four day marathon. It also included inviting the AIMers from D.F. and GDL. And Jordan and Angel came from GDL only.

The VBS was divided in two parts, and Lalo from D.F. taught the kids, and Ivan from Leon Sur taught the other two days. The topic was the life of Jesus.

AS it is expected there were some areas in which we need to improve, but it was a good time to see kids visiting the church. As well as their parents.

Kids are very important to church. Their perspective of God's love seen in us molds their view of church in the future when they are adults. So we gave them free bibles, crafts, and invitations to come to church on Sunday.

We praise God for the time we had this week to serve kids. But also our youth, which means girls only, worked amazingly. They are great girls that demonstrated God's love in their lives.

A Word from the missionary: THANKS !

In the recent weeks, God has been at work in Leon. I would like to share in this post four important developments: cancellation of the work in Silao, Growth among the Leon Sur Church, bumpy roads with the church in La Libertad, and our relationship with you all.

After much work and research over the months in Silao, we developed a technique of evangelization and some plans that were exciting and very possible. Unfortunately, after praying and counting the cost, I have decided to pull the plug. In other words, we will be in prayer and looking for partners for the city of Silao, but we will not be intentionally starting any work there. There is a possibility of some of our members moving to Silao and if this happens then we could possibly renew our vision. As a missionary, failure has to be part of what we do in view of the victory we have in Christ, we are not a business that just expands a franchise, but believe that God is Lord and will do what he needs to do. Some of the main reasons are, the departure of Bill Calderon to Florida and Ben and Jazmin expecting a baby. These are blessings for both of the workers and we know God is at work in all these things. Please pray for Silao and if you know anyone wanting to move there, let us know.

At the end of June the three elders in Leon Sur reached their first 6 months of shepherding. With the help of other men like, Felipe, Ivan, Manolo and other families, it was a good six months. It has been a little rough with personality differences and theological understandings between the relationships, families and members. This is expected with 80+ people all trying to find out what they are and their spiritual gifts. My role with my family has been observers of this process. We have spent many hours in prayer and one-on-one conversations, all through this trying to stay away from the focal point of the decision making. To many this seems to be a weakness on our part, just standing by but, after meeting with the leadership last week, there has been a surge of spiritual growth and a brighter future for the rest of the year with closer leadership. We just need to keep our eyes on Jesus and let his Spirit continue to guide us. We have finished speaking about the book of proverbs and in our children and youth classes we took time to teach life of Christian faith. In our adult classes I have been taking time to teach the characteristics of the Church. Please pray for the women ministry, youth ministry and camp, VBS, and our big celebration soon of the 7th anniversary.

When I remember the first year we started meeting in our living room I understand that it was a very frustrating time because the church was small. La Libertad church continues to be in that first stage of growth, where losing one or two families is almost catastrophic. Alfonso, Carlos, Chris, and Alberto have done a great job of leading the church, but they have reached the place where they need to get out of Alfonso’s house and find a place of worship in order to have more room for classrooms and fellowship. We have tried to provide resources in order to equip this church better with Bibles, books, children’s material, and chairs etc... but much is needed since it is a lower class church. Please pray for their growth and especially keeping some members who have started to bounce between Leon Sur and Libertad creating gossip and problems.

Lastly, but not at all the least important is your relationship with us. We have been this whole year through a time of restructuring in our economy and support (As many of you have probably experienced also in recent months). After taking some time of looking at essentials and sharing our vision with some people, God has delivered us so far with grace, and we feel very humble. We would especially like to thank Mary Alice Gonzalez, Pet and Tammy Baker, and our sponsoring congregation at the Cameron Church of Christ for their gifts of money, but especially for their continual encouragement and understanding of our family needs. We understand that there are many people that make this work possible also, like : The Tuckers, Merritts, Millers, Arnolds, Levis, Thornton, Singer, and many more individuals; who in many ways by monthly support or individual gifts including encouraging letters and emails, we have been able to stay here for 7 years. So, in the name of Maicah, Emma, Tana and Omar we thank you and praise God for all you have done in His name.

As you can imagine there are many other aspects of our work that are hard to blog about or explain: our Aimers (who have done a tremendous job), our discipleship classes, our counseling times, Andrea and Paola possibly being a part of Aim, praying for Evelyn and Beto in Scotland and Beto in Ecuador, people having babies, and weddings etc.... Not to mention our obligation to be husband and wife before God, parents to our children, and extensively our work with the Guadalajara church, Guanajuato and Comfort churches etc.... It is truly more than we have asked or imagined.

Re-Dream
Things are changing, things have been changing, and things will continue to be changing. All throughout my life change has been something that is really hard for me. Change in plans, change in environment, just change in general. Throughout AIM, this has gotten easier because of the constant change that as AIMers you go through.
During our last team meeting Omar talked about this a lot and gave me some really good insight on the changes that we are going through now. There are so many different stages that you can put on AIM. By this I mean during your time there are so many different ways you can classify the changes that you go through, the different environments you are in, or the different time periods. For example you can split up AIM into two parts very obviously there is the time in Lubbock (also known as the schooling portion) and the time on the field (also known as the apprenticeship time). You can put different stages into the time in Lubbock, First term (more of the bible study time) and Second term (more as the team building time). You get the point.
Omar this last week split AIM up into three different stages that I hadn’t really heard before, but was a really good encouragement to me ministry wise. He split the time into Class time (Lubbock time), Team time (the beginning of your field), and Me time (towards the end of your field time). It kind of sounded really strange at first, but after it was being explained it made a lot of sense to me and really did challenge me in a lot of ways.
Class time is the more obvious of the three although class time and team time start to merge towards the end of Lubbock. You are pushed into a class of for us 66 together all the time, doing all the same homework, and hearing all the same news for the first 8 months of AIM. As you can see on the little drawing that Omar made things might get rough during your time in Lubbock, but for the most part you are with everyone and you are being encouraged, there is constantly somewhere there for you wherever you are.
Team time begins while you are still in Lubbock, but really takes off when you start your time on the field. In the beginning of the field time as a team you have your firsts and you do a lot more together and have a lot more team devos and things together. Your ministries also tend to surround the team for the most part. In the diagram you can see that you go up up at first and there are down parts that tend to have to do with different times of culture shock and dealing with team issues that you might have.
Me time comes more towards the end and sometimes the middle of your field time. This time starts when team changes begin. Team members start leaving the field either because they have finished their time or because of unchangeable circumstances. As a team dynamic things are constantly changing at this point. Things have begun to change a lot. This is a time where you start looking at ministries more as ministries you are doing by yourself rather than as a team or with other teammates. This doesn’t mean that you stop that and that you don’t do things with your teammates, but as teammates are starting to leave the field and teams are getting smaller, you don’t always have that opportunity anymore. Now the complete drop off is a little bit of an exaggeration, but that is what can happen if you don’t start this re-dreaming process. You being to feel alone. You might feel frustrated with the fact that you just don’t know what to do anymore, it’s all normal feelings, but the best thing to do is re-dream about things that you want to do with your ministry.
Me time is where our team is getting to. Teammates have left the field and the team is getting smaller. We are learning to work more with who is still here, but we are also doing a lot more ministry alone and Omar has reminded us to start re-dreaming. By this he means to start thinking about the things that you want to do as ministry and that are things that won’t be effected when others are leaving. Things that are your ministries, but that you can do with or without others. For me that isn’t the easiest thing. I am a people person and I would rather be with people than alone. I would rather do things with another person, but it is something that has challenged me also in this sense. I am challenged to re-dream up my ministries and find where I am and what is my place right now.
I thank God for my coordinators who don’t just hold our hands and say that everything is going to be alright. They push us to do things on our own and they remind us that there is a life after AIM where we are going to have to do this all by ourselves. They challenge us to really find out what we want with our lives and who we want to be. If you don’t like to study and that isn’t your gift then you shouldn’t go to school do something with your life that will get you somewhere, if you like to study and you like to be in school do that. Do something that you are gifted at and that you enjoy doing! God made you the way you are for a reason. They have really brought into perspective what life looks like inside and outside of the AIM world and it has challenged me a lot!

Implementation

In the recent months it seems like we have had much talking and discussing about discipleship. Making followers of Jesus is not easy. Although it is easy to follow Jesus. Practicability and common sense in making the experience of Jesus alive is what we are trying to accomplish with this new card.

In a nut shell, many people here in Mexico attend the weekly nutritionist to get a new list of practices for this week to loose weight. So In this same practice I created this green card to be carried to use it daily. It has one word they process through the week. (for example trinity) And the discipline of these habits will be a new process of making disciples.

The idea was for everyone of the church members to follow and use this card. But some are not willing to start. So although it will take a while, I am excited to see what God will accomplish in our lives. The main group of over thirteen people will make the church a better group. And if others will follow them, we can begin a multiplication of maturity. Our church and vision is lacking commitment and participation. In the last month I have experienced some new epiphanies. After many years of praying and preparing for many years we wanted to plant churches. And now that we have one church planted in Leon. What else do I want?

See, the issue is that in the façade all is awesome in Leon Sur. We have elders, deacons, teachers, members, activities, events, cells at homes during the week, we help children's homes, work in marginalized areas, we visit our new church plant in La Libertad, even wanted to plant a new one in Silao. But.... (there is always a but!)

WE are not making disciples. People are not fully devoted to Jesus and his teaching in the kingdom. Why? To an extent we may assume that they have not been exposed to the word, or that we as missionaries have done a poor job. Although we may conclude many reasons, and they may be correct. But there is more than meets the eye for many reasons. WE are not aware that there is a spiritual warfare and we are part of it everyday. There are casualties. People are wounded. And more sadly, some die.

I do not want to die. And if we are Jesus we live on for eternity.

The Church is always identified with suffering, pain, and hard work. Can we actually assume that it will be easy? Missionology experts will be quick to tell you how much incongruence, broken lives, and needs are part of working in the body of Christ. I have idealized the real church to the extent of being a spoiled missionary. Can we really want more every time?

The church this week was a traditional one. There are parts of love, serving, and more that happened too. We had classes, people wanting to be baptized. IS that not enough?

The bottom line of what I am trying to report is that Leon Sur is maturing. We are all maturing. And it hurts. It is not a walk in the park. Our expectations and plans require one thing.....TIME. We can not do anything without "time" - And today I have to say I am guilty of trying to not believe this.

Just another Sunday

It seems like Sundays are never the same at church in Leon Sur. There are always events, people, announcements, etc. God is great in making people see what his power does around us. This Sunday was just another Sunday. It was a time to say "see you later" to Michelle. She is an AIMer from Miami. And did a great job as an AIMer. She will be returning home this week. The church gave her a small gift, and a diploma acknowledgement of her efforts here.

Also, this Sunday we took the time to discuss some features of the lady's day coming in Dec. Manolo with the Elders have done a great job in organizing all the plans. The group of ladies was divided in three, and each elder's wife was leading their area. It is interesting to see the aculturalization of the church to the Mexican fabric. As a missionary and church planter is an exciting moment. Although it is hard to sit back and observe what God is doing.

Please pray for the growth and maturity of Christ's church. we strive to make new disciples be real, and walking in Jesus words. But to see God at work at every layer of the church is amazing. The youth ministers are doing awesome, and we hope to continue to re-dream this Sunday as the end of the first half in 2011 is over. Time to grow is here !

Divine 9 Retreat

This week I had the blessing in participating with our AIMers, Ben, and other missionaries in Mexico in a retreat in Puerto Vallarta. A great man donated his week in a time shared and allowed us to be at the beach, and discuss the need to create a curriculum for Christlikess in Mexico. We did not want to ignored the chapter nine of Dallas Willard's book named "Divine Conspiracy" to help us stay in target. But the time was a blessed time with men of God. Although we do not seem to agree in all areas of our lives, we shared the most important parts to our passions. And to see the Spirit at work was worth it.

The reality of the lack of discipleship among our churches today is high. We see many be close to God, be baptize, and even seem some how faithful. But little practices imitating Jesus are seen in the everyday life. This is what we desire to change. By providing some tools to accommodate culturally, biblical, and even physically with the curriculum.

There were more questions created then answers. And it is in the process of development. We ask that you will pray with us, take time to fast, share what you know, and if you would like to participate in the conversation. We will be posting information soon.

Re-Birth & Dreaming

Last week-end we had the blessing in being in Guadalajara for my mother's birthday. But also we had a great time with the local church on Sunday. It was a time to see their new place of worship, and dream together for what the future will have.

We shared the message from the letter to the Colossians to remind us of the burial we had at baptism to dress ourselves up in Christ. Two people gave their lives to the Lord and were immersed before we took the Lord Supper to remind us of his love.

God has shaped a great church in El Colli Church. WE see leadership, servan-like attitudes, and mostly the desire to be godly. Please pray for the whole church. WE desire to see their building be done, and we know that their efforts to plant churches in Tepic, Tepa, Tequila, and even Leon are priceless. We see many fruits of the Spirit among them, and us. So we praise God for his church.

In the last month we have had temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. But it is not the only heat we have been taking recently. Since the beginning of 2011 we have been extremely busy with maturing and facilitating growth in the Leon Sur Church, helping equip the new church in La Libertad, and taking the time to research our church plant in Silao. We have seen Aimers leave the field and have taken time to continue our education. These are all just the beginning of our ministries. God is still working in our marriage and our children. People with whom we are sharing the gospel with, cell groups, and outreach among other things also fill our time. We have asked ourselves if this is even healthy for us. But we can already see the rest of this year looking the same. We ask that you would continue to pray for our ministries and thank you for your continual support. We understand that you are all busy with your lives and we thank you for making us part of your lives and work. Everything we are doing is no longer under strategy or huge plan, but we know God still controls everything for his glory.

For this week we had much to prepare and God blessed us with great results. I had to travel to Abilene for a Class, and Tana had to prepare for the lady's retreat during the week-end. Although much of the work had to be done by Ilse and Esperanza. They invited Maria (my mother) from Guadalajara and Ilse from Guanajuato to share with the ladies. The topic was the transformation of all women who live a Christian life. In attendance they had over twenty three ladies. They spent the night in tents and had a good time with games, lessons, interaction, and conversation. God is amazing to bring those who need to have relationships in his church.

This week, also, we had a great Sunday. Roberto lead us in the conversation of the book of Proverbs and all we learn from God's wisdom. The other bishops are taking care of the church, with much devotion. But we are at a crossroads with the renewal of the contract for the building. So we will have a prayer time on WED night this week to ask for guidance.

Ivan and all of the other teachers have done amazing jobs in teaching the different classes. And we hope to see a great summer filled with times to share God's grace.

I would like to praise God for saving me and protecting me from a fire on my way back from Dallas. The plane which was flying had to stop in an emergency in San Antonio. We had to wait and get a new plane. God protected all 26 of us passengers, and pilots. Some people were concerned about the end of the world. And others did not even know what had happened. I praise and thank God for all he does, in my life. Being a student, teacher, and servant is filled with moments in which we desire to be in heaven. But much has to be done here on earth. So Today I live to do that.

God loves you...

Silao, Guanajuato. It's a small town outside of León with a population of a little over 140,000. For a few years now, Omar and the other missionaries here in León have targeted Silao to be the next church plant and just recently started the "ground-breaking" of planning to head in that direction. This morning, Princeton, Michelle, Jeni and I were able to be a part of this new and exciting experience as we, along with Omar and Roberto and Esperanza Rubio, walked the streets of Silao asking a few questions to get a better idea of the interest and status of the area.
The first couple of questions had to do with the interest of the people and if Jesus had much of an influence on them. The last two focused on the person on a more personal level: What is the Bible to you? and When was the last time you heard that God loves you? I expected for some to answer that they hadn't read much of their Bible, if at all. What I wasn't ready for was the last question. I wasn't ready to look into the eyes of an older man and hear him tell me that he had never heard that God loves him. I wasn't ready to hear about a woman who says she hears it every eight days when she goes to service. I wasn't ready to see a young teenage girl look me in the eyes and sort of giggle at the question. After giving my (attempted hidden) look of confusion away, she says sorry, but that it's shameful for her to say...like it's embarrassing...but that she never had. All I could think was, my friend, as a Christian...this is embarassing for me. Because when I think about it, before today, when was the last time that I told someone that God loves them?
You know, I figured that there were people in this world who hadn't heard that God loves them...but to actually see the faces of these people...it's a totally different story. It broke my heart. Before we left, I made sure that every single one of those people I talked to today heard with their own ears that God loves them. I don't say this to blow my own horn, but simply because it is exactly what they needed to hear. My heart captured every single face today who had never heard that God loves them, and it makes me think of all of the other x number of people in the world who are hearing it for the first time as well...or who are still waiting to hear it.
I'm not sure when the last time you've told someone that God loves them or if you ever have, but I challenge you to tell someone today...and the next..and even the day after that. Whether you know them or not, whether you like them or not, tell them...because it just might be that one seed that God waters into a field. It just might be the only phrase that they ever hear of God and/or love. And if one person hears it and shares it with the next, just think of how rapidly the message of God and His love will be spread!
People need to hear that God loves them. If you haven't heard that today, recently or ever, I pray that God places someone in your path to not only tell you those three precious words, but to show you of His love as well. Though this isn't much on my part, I have to tell you my dear friend....

We are Not cowboys

Today we rally up some people to do surveys in the city of Silao. Although it seems counterproductive to take the time to go and meet people like this. But it is actually a great palace to take the posture of a learner from the city. It is an acceptance that we are not the only ones holding all truth. Silao has unique characteristics. And to know these asking questions help.

12 people in all. Ten questionnaires per person. Four questions asking God's presences, people's view of Jesus, and the bible's role in their lives. Soon we will reveal the answers. WE know that in few people we met, there is a need of Jesus and his message to the people in Silao.

See, in many times we approach mission as if we were cowboys. As if we could walk in and take all control by the power of our bullets of knowledge. Or even more similar as the analogy, we try to kill all that do not follow our teachings, and ways. It brings followers, baptisms, and all. But little disciples.

WE ask that you keep the city and the people in your prayers. The work to plant churches is not a simple one. And to oversimplify it can be counterproductive. Many lessons are taught after several years in Mexico.

Also, amazingly enough was to see one of our elders, two missionaries, five aimers, and me! So God has created a team to see the church in Silao work. We pray that with his help things will follow what he is already doing in the city.

CoN La BiBlia aBierta

Leon Style ......

With the help of an elder and our Lord to push us to victory. After having a meeting with elders of the church here in Leon a Sur we decided to start introducing the DVD's To small groups. . Has a an Aid to teaching So far in our small group we have been using them. Now we are going to other small groups to introduce them. So far the Small groups we have visited are very enthusiastic and want this to take off. This past Friday we Attended a small group to give them some bibles and to tell them about Con La Biblia Abierta. Together we watched one of the lessons And the small group learned a lot and loved it. the called it refreshing.They have agreed this not a Tool to wear out but to aid them for lost who come to their small groups. The list of ideas is endless but its good to see that this gift will serve a Purpose here in Leon and with the work We are doing here. Soon the small group organizer will return and will figure a way to involve the dvd's in all small groups and something for the lost.

Good Celebration

Today Roberto challenged us all to be more missional in the church. He asked all of us to start being more participant of all the church affairs. And to start the new church roles, Felipe and his family will be taking the church's role of church building and Laboratorio biblico. Bill will be leaving Leon soon, to be married to Lety in June. And this produced some space for the Orozco Family to lead.

So this Sunday was not Mother's Day in Mexico. It is always celebrated on May 10th regardless of the day it falls in. But the church took advantage of the time to honor the mothers. WE had some good gifts to honor them. The kids brought some potpourri, pictures, and a cook book for each mother.

The church had 28 ladies in all who were present to received the gift of the church. These cook books were the ones made by the recipes from the church too. We gathered them a few months ago, and we finally have a copy.

The Lord continues to build his church in Leon Sur. We have seen many things be challenged, and we hope the continual leadership of the elders, and other men to be fulfilling his mission in Mexico.

La Libertad Church

Well, since my last post Chris mentioned that he was not recognized. SO I decided to write this post to recognize him. He is one of our AIMers; he is from Alaska and has done a tremendous job at the new church plant. Since before the beginning at this church he attended small groups, and studies at this new place. So when we sent all these men and women from Leon Sur he followed them to be part of the plant as well.

So far we have seen two families come and go from the core group you see in the picture. The Lord will continue to build his church. And we are confident that this summer we will have more oportunities to serve the community and its people.

Alfonso, Carlos, and Chris are the men leading all classes, and sermons. Soon we will continue our time of training and leadership with them. The mission is huge, there are many thousands of people who live in this area. And on Sundays one of the largest markets are open a few blocks away from the meeting place.

Our desire is to equip this church with all they need. But as you know, resources are scarce and we ask that you may pray and help with what you can.

We do appreciate Chris. He is a great man of God. And we know he will be used in his kingdom.

Mexico is blessed...

In the last decades the work of the church in Mexico has seen many men and women come to labor. There are some who come and go fast, others are able to stay longer, and even more are some who are part of the culture as any other person in Mexico. This last month we were blessed to take some time with the Gonzalez and Rush families. Both have labored in Mexico for almost a decade, and their marriages are a testimony to what God can do on the mission field. Also, in this small trip to the river, we were blessed to see all of our kids play together. For a missionary these are priceless times. And it is for this reason that we took our six AIMers to participate and be a part of the future of the church in Mexico. Keep all the families working in Mexico. Violence, money, and other reasons are not making it easy to be here.

Partnerships

During the last two weeks we have been traveling. And one of the trips was to visit our partners in the Church of Christ at Falls Church. They have been with us for almost four years now. We thank them, and pray for their continual growth in their missional efforts.
Part of the visit was a time for us to share with their Spanish Speaking Congregation. We had about six churches come together with 250+ in attendance. They meet every last Sunday of the month rotating buildings. This time happened to be in Falls Church. I loved sharing the crucifixion and resurrection for passover. Also, we shared a meal with all our brothers, and sisters.
Also, in this trip we presented the needs we have in our work in Leon, as well as took some time to visit the D.C. Area. Our family had a great time with those who love the Lord. People's hospitality, servant hearts, and more was worth the trip for hours in a plane, train, and bus.

It is only by uniting in partnership that the church of God will continue to move in areas where we had not intended to see his Spirit take us. Unity and dedication from both parts will make the church be encouraged. Thanks Church.

Holy & Passover Weeks

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you; righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

Zechariah 9:9

For a Mexican the next two weeks are expected and waited for the whole year. Our tradition has taught for year to remember the holy time of Jesus entrance in Jerusalem and his resurrection. It is a time when people are expected to hold their desires and begin to mourn. Some people take it so serious that they fast and even re-enact the crucifixion of Christ.

But on the other hand. Millions of Mexicans and visitors go to the beach, party, drink, and owe money which they borrowed for this time off work and school. Not very holy, nor thinking of Jesus and his sacrifice.

We live two blocks from the Catholic temple in Leon. We see the people walking for mass. We hear the bells ring all the time calling people to worship. And honestly is not what it used to be when I was a little boy.

Now, the 2010 census has indicated that one thousand people are not following the Catholic Faith daily in Mexico. Not that they are migrating to denominations, or protestants (as they refer to us!) but they are just becoming secular, materialistic, and not spiritual at all.

It is the time to take very seriously what God desires in his word. We will continue to work, share and be Jesus to those around us. I can be sure there are many leaving our churches too. We see empty pews, less mission funding, and more interestingly more secularism and materialism too.

If Jesus has called us to a life of discipleship. And it is expensive, costly, and not for the fainthearted.

Our prayer is that we should be more willing to remember his sacrifice often. Not yearly, nor weekly, but daily. And it is upsetting people are secular, and materialistic. But moments like this we can be reminded that many of us will call out: "Crucify him! Crucify him!..."

Youth Camp

On Saturday and Sunday 20+ youth gathered in the local park for a camping week-end. Ivan and Isa were the leaders who decided to take the class for a two day experience. Including worshiping by themselves. It was a blessing for all of them. And Us.

Tana and I were asked to teach them in two sessions about making choices. So we did. Although we had some rain the day on Saturday was a challenge to see God at work in their lives. My family and I did not stay the night. We had to attend church next day and preach and teach.

The time with the youth was a good time to be reminded that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Using games, conversation, and even moments of prayer God molded our youth group. Sadly many people did not participate. Some did not want to be part of this event. So on Sunday they were challenged and reminded that we must take opportunities in life.

Leon Sur was weird for worship. Singing was different without our young singers. But the elders were encouraging to the congregation.

We are looking forward to having another day like this any day!

God is at work in the Capital city of Guanajuato. WE have started a relationship with them since we arrived in Mexico. The Ramirez family do a great job preparing and helping those who want to know about Jesus.

This week, we had a meeting with them, and took some bibles. They helped us by paying to ship them from Mexico City. It is a partnership to praise God.

The church in the city of GTO is a new one. Still in the infant stages, and has much to grow. But with those who worship, lead, and serve we are amazed at how mature they are in the Lord.

Last night we were invited to participate in a leadership class. So Roberto (elder), Ivan (youth minister), Bill (ex-aimer), and Princeton (aimer) with me attended the class. The preacher from North Carolina shared some principles from the NT and Paul in leading.

The relationship will continue to build in Jesus promise to make disciples. We are blessed to continue to work withe them, and we hope to see more happen in the state.

Provision OR Weakness

Ivan and Isa are our new ministers for the youth. The elders have appointed them to lead together as a couple. Although they have been married for about two years, and they just have a baby. They are amazing workers for the church. If I have to say, they are the best ministers we have had in a while. See, they both are vocational. She is a Psychologist and teacher, and he is a teacher and a Computer Engineer. Since they teach at a University they know how to deal with kids just fine. But also, they have a great sense of serving the congregation. He leads our worship, and with Gorge's help they do fine.

Today, they invited us to their home. WE had lunch and watched a soccer game. It was a nurturing time for both us couples. And we see them as a huge addition to the work in Leon Sur.

Now, we have to consider that in the most time of weakness - God comes through and makes us feel like a nut. Provision such as these are hard to miss. And definitively not seen in real time. Please pray for them, and us with the process of ministry. The church is weak, and at this time probably the bottom of the barrel. It is the lowest time of the year to be spiritual. Ironically enough it is the most holy weeks in Mexico under the Catholic tradition. But we are feeling the lostness in our leadership, teachers, members, elders, and all.

Keep praying for our interns, missionaries, AIMers, and us. WE are needing to light fires such as Ivan and Isa's to make things happen. It is always by those who are doing much in the world that the church moves forward.

Saturday we were asked to teach the youth about choices. So they will be camping for one night, and having their own worship at the park. Tana and I will be sharing twice about making choices. Pray for us, and their new adventure.

The Cost of Bibles

A few months ago we heard that someone would be donating and bringing twenty thousand plus bibles into Mexico. WE were excited to see if we could get some of them to use in Leon, and other places. So this week we received the call that they had arrived in Mexico City. Now, we live 5 hours away from the capital. And honestly, it is not easy to drive and move in the city. Although we have driven there and back plenty of times in the last years.

But this year was different because we had our car plate stolen a few months ago. So now our permit to drive an American vehicle does not match our new car plate sent from Arizona. In this predicament we had to think quick and make a choice. WE asked people to may be bring them, but it was complicated and some cars were too small.

Our AIMers volunteered to bring the bibles by bus. But it was way too many boxes. So we made a request to raise money and have them shipped to Leon. See this is where it is crazy for missionaries. WE have 500+ free bibles, (which someone paid already!) but to bring them was about $0.60 American Cents to bring to Leon. And today we received them.

Chris, Raciel, and others have donated some money. We are lacking some but we paid for them to be here. Now the work is to share and deliver them to places. Most of our work is with places like Guanajuato, Comonfort, Guadalajara, Tepic, Tepa, Tequila, and our two congregations in Leon Sur and La Libertad. In addition to this we will be using them in the new church plant in the near city of Silao.

So even though the cost is high, and we must invest what we do not have to get them here. God's word is moving, and we know it is alive. He will be glorified and honored by those who read them.

Tiempo Nuevo Magazine

For the last years my wife and I have participated writing for a magazine printed here in Leon. It is a magazine focused to reach those who do not know Christ. It is an effort made by Christ-Centered Churches in Leon. A total of 32+ churches are printing and writing articles. Over 5000 are printed monthly, and used in all kinds of places such as haircut places, stores, coffee shops, etc.

WE have enjoyed and have been blessed with the opportunity to share what we are learning in his word, and our experiences. Also, part of the magazine is to present testimonies. So we have asked a few of our members to share their lives and what God has done. It has brought some people to visit us, and some times we are approached in the city as the pastors who write in the magazine.

When I was in College one great man told me that a good person reads, but a better person writes. WE are committed to share what we are living in his kingdom. It is amazing that my wife writes in her second language. God uses our weakness, and many people are brought forth for his glory.

Yesterday I took a bus for 3 hours to the city of Guadalajara. The reason of the trip was to meet the church in El Colli, and also an elder from the Church in Texas. It was a great time to share what God is doing in the Western part of Mexico. The Zapopan church in el Colli has been very missionary minded for a while now. Their efforts have taken them to places in Tepic, Tequila, Tepatitlan, and in the near future in Ixtlan del Rio. All of these cities and towns are small places with potential for God's church to grow.

Part of the visit was to take time to see the construction being done in the church's building. The roof done with 90% of their floor finished too. In about two or three weeks they will be able to start worshiping in this place. The construction has never been the focal point of their labor. For this reason it has taken some time. But they will be praising God for what he is doing with them.

The trip was quick. But fruitful. The church in Texas will be meeting soon, to share what they have accomplished in partnership with the Mexican church in Jalisco. God is amazing in bringing people together for his glory. There are much things to be done still. The work is not by far completed. But we know that we must continue to plant new churches. He will do the growing.

Fellowship

This past Sunday was a great Pot-luck. It was great fellowship and the best part was that we were just like another member. We did not organize or bring tons of food and it all went smoothly. One elder family and Ben and Jazmin went to preach and teach at the church in Guanajuato so we missed them. But the unity in the members and the fellowship and love between all was great to see.
The food was good and we all stayed a while to talk and just have fun.

Visitors from Cuernavaca

In the last week we had the blessing of seeing our brothers and sisters from Cuernavaca. The Reyes family has been in Mexico for a year with a team of three families. They are going through language acquisition, and cultural adaptation. And two of their four great daughters came to visit our AIMers for a week. And on FRI they came to picked them up. We had a blast talking and being with Recardo and Monica. They are excited, ready, and God is preparing great things with their team in Cuernavaca.

Please pray for their plans, and dedication in the city. They are moving to a new home, schooling, and all related to the plant is what they ask for prayers. We love seeing God bring people who will be serving him.

Another beginning

After five years of marriage we were blessed to have a daughter. WE did everything for her, we took pictures, video, saved every napkin used. It was our first baby. Later we had a son and he did not received the same treatment. Why? may be because we are experienced, and the newness was not there anymore.

In the same way, we planted Leon Sur. And we did amazing pictures, video, etc. And now we are heading to Silao for a new plant. And after having planted La Libertad it is not the same treatment. Has it lost newness?

WE have taken the time to pray, and meditate on serving the people of the city of Silao. In 1995 the population of the city was 150K. It is influenced by the General Motors assembly, and the production of wood furniture. It is about 20 minutes from Leon. Between the city of Guanajuato and Leon.

The two biggest religious tendencies is the Catholic Church, and the Light of the World Church. Both of these tend to be controversial with each other. The rituals, and practices are not Christ Centered. On the one hand, the Catholic church, has amazing buildings; and on the other, the Light of the World, has huge laser buildings to simulate their light.

Our desire is to teach people about being disciples. Simple evangelism, and conversation over God's word. It will be slow. We will start one on one. And the Lord will build his church. He is great in bringing those who need to be saved.

Please pray for the work in Leon Sur, La Libertad, and now Silao. God is amazing in working with many people in many places. And we must move on to be missional.

So, just as I love my children the same way. These churches are special to all of us.

Church's Permanence in Leon Sur

On Sunday we had the time to preach, teach, and remember the Lord's sacrifice. It was a blessed Sunday with 80+ attendance. But the best part of the day was after church Gloria invited us to her house to fellowship and grill meat. WE had almost 100 people in her house, including her family. It was good to see the elders serve the church. And also some of the members talking with each other. Our kids had a blast swimming in this small pool. In addition we had a few games after the time to eat to know one another.

The church has embraced Gloria as a good member since she was robed in her home recently. Times like these are essential for her family to see Jesus in the body. And we Praise God for his day of rejoicing.

Back in 1995 my wife and I started a long adventure. We have had exposure to the AIM (Adventures in Mission) program from Lubbock Texas. It was our intention to join a program for only two years; but today we are still coordinators of these AIMers you see in the picture.

It has not been easy for us to be working in ministry with the added focus of discipleship others. Although it is an adventure for the student, we have to deal with many mundane things for them to minister with us. The system allows us to be friends and co-workers with many of them. But also some are here like a visitor then they depart leaving little legacy for us to nurture with the local church.

It is evident that we have had our ups and downs in the process, and we have seen many marry Mexican brothers and sisters to continue to minister here. So God has shaped us to be what is best in his hands. The plan is to continue to bring glory to his name.

Now, this is our last group. The current class in Lubbock was not interested in working in Leon. We are sad. And the Leon AIMers disappointed. But we pray that the local church will be taking some of the roles these AIMers are doing right now.

Our intention was to take a new group to both of the new church plants in Silao and La Libertad. We see a place of growth and capacity in AIMers to do this with us. But the Lord knows his mission.

Please pray for these current AIMers here in Leon. They have surpassed other classes in their hearts serving the culture, and church. Some have lost support, so we pray that you can continue to help them.

Our kids, Emma and Maicah, love the AIMers. They know that it is fun, good, and impressive! So we desire for others to enjoy these men and women of God.

Moving on...

So on Sunday of this week we had decided to begin a new era in Leon. A time of learning and going back to year-one. Can we really be students of what God is calling us to do?

The Leon Sur Church is living and adapting to the leaders. Worship has its ups and downs, we are facing an unspoken relationship battle in the families. Adaptation to the needs, direction and ministries has been the key to allow healthy movement. So prayer is the only thing we do.

On other hand, La Libertad Church is such a fragile body. WE pray for them too. They are worshiping and sharing Jesus to the community. And Chris (AIMER) he has done a great work with the congregation. Alfonso and Carmen are opening their home with many good blessings. Although we need to continue to shape and nurture the vision to be God's mission.

The work of the AIMers has been vital to the continual feeding of relationships. We continue to study, pray, and build discipleship with them to be real and open. The city has taken them to be in ministry alone. They are at the crossroads of being ministers because of their own decision not because they were told what to do. All, we do is pray for them too. It seems some have lost support, and back at home people need to finish their commitments.

Also, our family is moving on to new stages. On Sunday we all four started feeling sick. So we had to stay home for three days. First time ever, and we felt terrible! So we prayed.
Our kids are doing fine in school, and we are starting to think what we are doing about school next year. Should we pay what we pay? Please pray for our marriage, our dedication, and hospitality. We will move on, and keep our Lord leading us.

WE praise God for Ben and Jazmin. They are doing amazing things, and keeping ministries, relationships, and all with direction and purpose. They will be going to visit supporters soon. Pray for them. Also, the Rubio family is having some struggles, and we pray because they have to move from their house, health issues, and more. Their supporters are great to them, but the church locally is not responding the way they should. Lastly, Bill and Lety have decided to get married this summer. So we have made plans, and preparations. We pray for their future, and especially as they face new trials, plans, and need of support. They have done great ministry with "con la biblia abierta" and we praise God for it.

Honestly this is the tip of an iceberg. We know that it is only by God's power the ministry we participate is done by God. WE desire to move on....
WE have struggles, fights, battles, and even nights when our sleep is gone! Support is missing from churches and individuals, (which they struggle themselves! and we pray for them!) but they move on. And so are we. It is our intention to still be here. To serve. To love. And to...well....let us know what you want!

Monthly Lady's Class

Every week on TUESDAY our ladies have taken the time to eat breakfast, pray, study and meet for a good morning with God. And since it was started there is always a group of people who are not able to come. So they decided to start a new lady's class on Saturday night once a month for them. And this time was Tana's time to teach. She repeated her class she taught for the Lady's day in December. She was asked to share it again, since some did not take it then.
The topic was taken from the book - Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy With God in the Busyness of Life Joanna Weaver.
It was a good new ministry. Although some of the lady's are not active as we would like to see them. Those coming are blessed. We have seen some five to seven women be weak in their leadership, discipleship, and walk with Jesus. Pray for their strengthen. And also pray for those coming tonight to be able to know God is pleased with two kind of hearts.

Come Before Winter

Come Before Winter for missionary women and women in Ministry in Latin America was held this year in Honduras. Woman from many countries, some Nationals who are also doing the work for the lord in there own country came. We had women from Mexico City, Coatlán, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Toluca, Leon, Morelia, and Cuernavaca Mexico. There where many women who do work in many parts of Honduras and a few from El Salvador and Costa Rica. God also brought women who are strong ministers to Spanish speaking people all over the states; places like Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and Arkansas.
God really blessed us with the staff from the Come Before Winter Staff who loved us, taught us, listened to us and prayed over us.
We had time to pray, study, discuss, cry and most of all connect and fall in love again with our Father. I believe that all of us left recharged and ready to continue working for our Lord in our places of ministry.
Many times women are discouraged in ministry and feel alone in what they do. These women at Come before Winter helped us see we are Not alone, but united. They showed us that even though we are down working in the pit... they , and many others, are holding our rope tightly and with much love and prayers.....Thank you all for your help and prayers and for loving us and keeping us here to continue to work for God. - Tana Palafox

So today we sent some requests for additional financial help. Us, the Palafox, have struggled in some ways that is causing us to be like the picture you see above. Please be prayerful about our needs, and the beginning of this year.

God has lead us with awesome supporters, and sponsors. They are also feeling the weight of missionary work -(there are changes happening in churches in the States). We do not intend to cry, or complain. But to be vocal about our needs.

Pray for us, and help us.

"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? God is too Good

As hard as it sounds we think God is too good to us. The church in Leon Sur has been creating new changes in those ministries started by the church plant. WE see many new people, new ministries, and even new visitors to be part of the church. Is it possible to see what we are doing as only a part of His will? In our worship we had little under ninety people. Can this be possible? Ben preached a great sermon to start our series from the book of Proverbs. The elders have lead the supper, offering, and even we have seen our youth step up to lead the worship. New teachers are sharing in our classes. The Church sent fifteen people to a new church plant. And have seen some aimers leave the field. And we still have close to ninety people. Giving has been stable, and our desire to be holy is demonstrated in the classes we share.

Our adult class has been taught around the idea of "church" and all the possible subjects around it. It is important to notice the importance of the church in or lives. And to see the growth produced by knowing his will in the roles we play. In other words we see many people coming to maturity in their walks in life; and we hope to see better discipleship.

Please pray for all these areas in which we see leadership raise from the body. AIMers have done amazing in leading others. WE have much to do in maturing and building up the body with time. Only God will bring the growth.

WE ask that you will keep Andrea and Paola in your hearts. These two ladies are wanting to attend the AIM program. And we need to see them become what God is calling them to do.

Also, please keep Rafael & Evelyn in Scotland, and Beto in Quito. These disciples are needed here in Leon - but God shapes us all under pressure.

Lastly, pray for Tana as she is going to Honduras for her time off. She will be a part of a spiritual retreat and we are blessed to know she will be nourished.

Sharing our stories

So this last week we were invited to share our lives with the church in El Colli, in Guadalajara. It is one of the most loved churches because of their history in Mexico. We have known many people since they arrived to Christ. And this week-end was a great time to share what God did in India, and in Leon.

We took the time to preach the word, and share what God has done in our lives. Sharing our work in places such as Guadalajara, Leon, and South America. The idea was to promote growth amount the young members to be missional. It was a time to share the need to get out and be sent. While we discussed these items, the church shared food, fellowship and prayer.

Princeton, was a great servant, and we had some influence over the church to see the AIM program as a possibility for the youth. And even to discuss how many people have to overcome areas to be Christ.

Also during this last week, we had our car plate stolen. WE have dealt with this scenario for the last days, and spent some money. Please pray and we thank Art and Jean for their love to serve us. WE will be getting the new plate next week.

Keep the church in Guadalajara in your prayers, and we hope to see them grow in their mission.

WOW AIMERS

Ivanka Chalco will finish her time as an Aimer in Leon next week. She has done a Great job and we are sooo proud of her and prayful for her future. She will be going to graduation and visiting family but has plans to come back to another part of Mexico to work with the church and get to know Eric better. They met at a Vacation Bible school in the Church in Chetumal, Mexico where he is a member. We are praying for her bright future and their continued growth.

Ramiro Zamora has also finished his time here in Leon and is home in Dallas and ready to work. He will be going to graduation and has also started an internship with his home congregation, South Side Church of Christ. He was a great Aimer and great Leader. We hope great things for him and hope to see him again soon.

The Flow of things

So recently we had to adjust to new schedules, and new ministries. For us the work in Leon has evolved to a levels of maturity. The church has cells at home weekly, prayer times, gatherings, lady's classes, youth meetings, elders at work learning what to do and how to do it, new church plants, and in the midst of all these ministries many hours in one on one discipleship to deepen the relationship with God. IT is not only about baptizing people. The charge Jesus sent was to make disciples. And it takes time, effort, money, and in many cases - loosing disciples. People make their choices and we must dust our feet off.

Slowly but surely we see spiritual gifts taking place. Men are stepping up to lead and direct in areas of spirituality, the building, offering, youth class, adult class, and all the other intricate relationship in a body such as Leon Sur. Love and patience is the key element to produce growth. If we are looking for professionalism in what people do is never going to be there. Church is not a business is a family. Also, Ramiro and Ivanka are ready to leave their experience in Mexico. They were great AIMers and their departure will produce leadership to raise from their disciples.

In addition to this, we have take the time to see our new church plant in La Libertad to slowly take shape to what they will be in the future. Carlos, Alfonso, Chris, and Jesus, are leading the new group. With their wives, and families they have taken a step of faith in their house. We have provided some help, but it is not dependent on Leon Sur. WE ask that you pray for them, and us to learn together what needs to happen here.

Our job to plant new churches is not over. The task still the same as when we arrived here in Leon years ago. And even before we even had life. It is a serious ministry that we plead with all of you to continue to participate. Our desire is to plant in the city of Silao. But it has not been a good start. WE have seen people desire to participate, but when things are tough they leave. So we must move on to star this church Gideon Style -with few men. Pray for us.

In short, we would like to praise God! We could not have imagine all these fruits. It is tangible to have many prayers we did answered today. HE is faithful, so let's keep praying.

Our plans to start a new church in Silao, we need partners to help us reach this new city about 35 minutes from Leon.

Praise God for all the things he does unseen. All the parts in which we are relying for him to be the sovereign Lord he is.

Disciples

The Lord commanded us to go and make disciples. And here in Leon we have seen the power of his word in action. The work done with men in this picture is not just a week, nor a month. See it is years of walking together in the way of God's Kingdom. Today there is much watering needed, and we see the growth produced by him.
Part of this blessing is to be able to receive our partners with Pete Baker from Alaska. They have been here with the local church in partnership for a while now. They have take the time to be here, and love the church. Thank you.
Also, in this work we see the part of the elders has been vital for many parts to flow in the process of discipleship. Our cells are going strong, and we hope to let the elders decide what to do in this 2011. Ben has lead us in the process of organization of our cells, and we are glad to see multiplication.
Please pray for the church, and us as we continue to labor in the city, state, and country.

Chairs for Christ

So what I am about to share is not the best way to explain how God works, but it is part of what mission work is all about. See we all have our little places that we connect and feel comfortable. For this post the use of chairs is what I am referring to. See our church at the Leon Sur congregation sent a new group to plant a new church about 25 minutes from where they meet. And when they started meeting they were promised chairs to use for their new meetings. WE are talking about 10 to 15 chairs. Well, since the missionary (me!) left to India. The Leon Sur church did not give any chairs at all! Because they are applying a different view. Which is biblical, and sound in what the new elders are entitled to do. (may be!) So when I return they have met for five week with what they could. About 12 to 15 people. A problem about chairs, instead of a unity if work for the new congregation sent by the church which is fully grown and has local leadership.

And you may be asking what are these elders thinking? or but I am asking why is the new church not able to pay for their chairs too! So both are in the wrong. One does not want to share what has been given to them in the past, and the new body does not want to commit enough to a new plant and pay for what they need. So we are praising God for Grace!

Most of us would step out, and simply say what they needed to do. Instead of being an aroma of Christ to both. What the missionary (me!) decided is to respect the elders and let them keep their chairs. And bought new 10 chairs (5 chairs, and 5 stools) for the new church. I told them that they needed to pay for what is needed. And that we are not dependent on anybody but themselves.

What I am trying to say is that we need to be the sweet aroma of Christ. People have to know that God's grace is more then chairs. We know this. We speak of this. But we do not live this.

Although I still had to pay $100 USDLS for the purchase. And this is what missionary churches in the states have to realize. It takes additional work, money, and conversation to begin new churches. It is like raising kids. It is a long term investment. WE cannot place the price of chairs to plant a new place of sharing Jesus. None of these members in the Libertad Church are paid minsters. They are opening their homes, time, and effort (after laying cement, tile, etc) to share Jesus. If we do not encourage this, then we are asking for the wrong people to serve the church.

The work must continue. WE are planting an additional church in the city of Sialo (40 min away) and let me tell you....we will need chairs! And who will provide them? Leon Sur Church? La Libertad Church? or the missionary (me!)?

If you have an answer please let me know. We have realized that the fields are ready, and the laborers are few. So pray to the Lord of harvest to send workers.

Yesterday Lety decided to dedicate her life to the Lord. For two years she has been studying ans asking questions. She was really sure of this, here favorite thing THAT she had never herd was about the Transfiguration of Christ. Lets take a look at it .......

Matthew 17:1-8

The Transfiguration

¹ And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. ²And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. ³And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." ⁵He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." ⁶When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. ⁷But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." ⁸And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

This was really emotional for her Has we studied about this. It was the Part where it say Jesus came and touched them that she saw that Jesus is God touching Man ..... And she knew what she had to do and its to dedicate her life to the Lord. We must have Studied about 5-6 hours looking at Mark. We Then Saw in his Gospel of Christ that What can man do ? And , What could the Son of God do ? Friday afternoon About 1:30 She was Baptized. It was good thing to see her parents their and them understanding that this is what needed to be done. God is Good and we are Blesses to be apaet of His Glory ....

Living Stones

Today we started our worship with the new design elaborated by our elders. These men have struggled, and had wrestled with the new challenge to lead the church. It is not easy to see that some people are following you. The church is not used to the process of following new leaders. Style and method are different for people, but we believe that content has not changed. WE are glad to still be here in the church to help with misunderstandings, and new levels of seeing God's word in other areas.

The new congregation (La Libertad Church) planted still going strong. We pray that the Lord will continue to build his church. WE are in need of more chairs, bibles, song books, and all the material for the Lord's Supper. As well as children's classes. So if you would like to help. Please let us know.

Also, we are glad to see that our future plan to begin a new plant in the city of Silao thirty minutes away from Leon is going well. Ben and Bill will be participating and leading the plant. WE are glad to see that God is providing what is needed. Our AIMers have played a key role. Ramiro will be leaving soon, and Ivnaka will be leaving too in four weeks. So we pray that our new changes and additions will be a blessing.

As you know we are still leading the church in Leon Sur, La Libertad Church, and this new Silao Church. I am still in school, and our work is a blessing. Many have sacrificed so much for us to be here. Our struggles are not easy, and we know that yours are not either. SO thank you.

We need your prayers, and support to continue this work. WE are glad to be tools and instruments to the glory of his kingdom.

A fly on the Wall

On Thursday night I arrived from a long trip to Leon. The Lord blessed me to be in Jangareddygudem (occasionally seen as JRG) which refers to a town in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. I was invited by IMG (India Mission Group, Inc.) to share God's word to the people of India. But I was the one who learned most from them. Joe Don Brymer, founder of IMG, was with us the whole trip and he is a great man of faith. The work there in India is focused in three formats. The first one is Education, the beginning of a new Christian School; secondly, evangelism by planting new churches and creating leadership in some thirty plus churches; and lastly, but most importantly, is the children's home with 60+ children living together. There is much to be done, but the Lord of harvest has provided many good people, and work done in this part of the world.
In short what happened! The Lord blessed us with a great trip. And by my last decades in ministry I had never done this much work in so little time. India Work is not for the lighthearted. We arrived and started with these items:
After our 10K mile trip from Texas to India we visited 15 Churches for Campaigns with an average of 80+ people each night. The result was 48 baptisms from preaching the gospel. Also we had a 200+ youth in a rally for three days in JRG. In addition to this we held a 50+ Preacher’s Seminar in JRG for one day. And since most of the churches are in need of shepherds a 35+ Elder’s Seminar for three days was an edifying time. In all we traveled 950+ miles in and all around traveling from JRG. We also had some time where we prayed with widows and the sick and passed out rice and oil for poor families.
The focal point in this work is the Children’s home; so we had a great blessing to meet 64 kids and their staff members. We spent time with the kids and saw the improvements for the future school being built there. As if we needed more to do, I had the time to make a video for fund raising, with PowerPoint and DVD for those interested. Our last week there we had a 60+ preachers seminar for two days in a different city, but 900 people in attendance. And not forgetting we spent Sunday Worship in different Congregations. Much work, and we pray that the Lord will provide people, and means to continue in the future.
The biggest need in the churches is deep discipleship and utilization of spiritual giftedness. Pray that the Lord of harvest will continue to build his church with the array of churches and individuals making this possible.

Thanks! And now what?

As you already know we have been in Leon for seven years now. And we desire to finish our commitment until 2014. Although there is much happening in India and I admire these men of faith in doing what they do every year. It was a good learning time to see what God does through his people. Our vision will continue in Latin America. May be in the future we will be back to visit. But we consider our spiritual giftedness in what we are doing. Our prayer is that IMG and the churches behind them will continue to do this and more for the saving of souls. But if you would like to assist in anyway please contact them at the information above. There is much to be done in the world. And learning from each other is definitively a blessing.

Finally, I would like to thank the Cameron Church, and Joe Brymer for this special invitation. As well as all of you friends and family who made this possible with your help. It could not have happened without you all. And I would like to extend my gratitude to my wife for taking care of many business at home, church, and AIMers while I was gone for a month. She is one of a kind; and she made this possible for me. It was the hardest thing for me this trip. But grace was enough.

The best thing learned...

The best lesson learned this trip was to see the way men of God, such as Joe Brymer, serve the ministry. It was a time for me to be a fly in the wall and see how to be the aroma of Christ in living color.

And the angels rejoice...

The angels rejoiced in heaven again this month!

Guillermina had her doubts. Her son, Bill, had gone off and joined the Church of Christ youth group all on his own. So she rejected Bill’s new faith, but that wasn't enough to bring him back to her. Later, Bill decided to be trained as a missionary, travel to a foreign country, and share the good news of Christ’s love.

Now the years have gone by, and Bill was able to return home for a visit during La Navidad, Christmas. This time, Guillermina was ready to learn more about Christ, but she still had her doubts. So Bill studied with her and shared the Con La Biblia Abierta DVDs on the Holy Scripture’s message about becoming a Christian, Haciendo Discipulos. Guillermina's doubts and fears were finally answered!

I wish you could have seen the glow of love and pride on Bill’s face as he showed me the video of his mother being baptized last week. Beautiful, the full circle of a family united in Christ… and the angels rejoiced.

This month Bill returned to Leon, Mexico armed with a Snowball microphone, recording software loaded into his computer, and training materials to encourage other potential radio talent in Mexico. He is also carrying a set of 124 DVD episodes of the Con La Biblia Abierta program to freely duplicate and distribute in Mexico. Please pray for this young man and his fiancée, Leticia, as they rejoin their mission team in Leon.

More and more studying...

The woman's ministry is going strong and doing well. They have on their own decided to cut out so many breakfasts that they were doing together and with the guidance of the elders wives now even more women get together on Tuesday mornings for a deep study of the book of Mark. After a few weeks then We will have a nice fellowship and breakfast time and then it is straight into studying the book of Hebrews.

I am excited and nervous about starting Hebrews because Esperanza is doing such a good job with Mark and I am teaching Hebrews and so far, just studying it has been a challenge and I hope I will do just as good a job teaching.

The classes are very intimate and everyone is interacting, which is great.

God is helping them to understand and immerse themselves in the scriptures, letting the Holy Spirit change their lives for Him.

Pray that they can continue on this road to understanding and a deeper faith in Him.

Life and Leadership move on.

It was a different Sunday today. The first Sunday completely organized and done by the new leadership. (elders, deacons and worship leaders). The preaching by one of the Elders, Arturo, was about a new and dedicated life to Jesus and his body. The next few sundays are going to focus on personal growth and renewal of our lives with Jesus so as to be able to preach and teach to others the gospel.

I have seen the three elders and their wives take a great role and concern for the church body and the classes and the level of work. It seems that they are really listening to God and doing their best to be the best leaders possible.

It is exciting to see them take on the roles of growth and love for the church. Each elder and wife are finding their specific area of talents and they are showing a great love for their flock.

I as a leader and teacher find it so great to be able to share this care and love that Omar and I have for the church.

Thank you to all who have worked along side this church and have prayed for the church. They are growing and they are looking beyond Leon, with ideas for ministry and for missions.

God is being glorified and the leaders of the flock are learning, growing, teaching and praying.

It is a wonderful work.

Continue to pray for Omar and us as he works in India. He seems to be doing great and loving all that he is learning. God Bless... Tana

Starts with Prayer

It is a great privilege to be back on line! WE are today in such a society which moves at a fast pace. So we thank you all for the communication and use of technology to stay close to us. WE are starting this 2011 with many blessings and praises to our Lord.

The end of the year was filled with much to do. And this new year is looking the same way. The last post was meant to be informative of our situation, our vision, and our desire to be in Leon. Some of you responded and loved us with many ways in which the Lord is praised. We thank you from the bottom of our heart.

So we decided to start the year’s postings with a prayer requests:

Praise God for good time with the holidays and family. WE had an awesome time with christian friends, and family.

Leon Sur as a church is 100% on the hands of the Mexican leadership. It seems like a good future for the ministries.

Starting in 2011 a new church will be planted in the outer skirts of the city. Alfonso and his family will lead the group of fifteen and some AIMers will assist too.

Please pray for the churches in Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Comonfort, Tequila, Tepic, and Tepatitlan.

Our plans are to start a new work in the city of Silao.

Pray for the new AIM team, they will see their last two teammates depart in the next two months, and since they finished Spanish Classes we expect to see much being done with the churches

Our kids will start school this Monday, pray for a good start and healthy beginning.

The Lord has blessed me to be able to visit India. The trip will be for four weeks, and we pray it will be a success for his kingdom.

Pray for our elders in Leon Sur. To have wisdom, and humility to lead the church

New church curriculum will continues to start with Faby and Gaby. So we will have new classes and new teachers

Pray that our Laboratorio Biblico will continue to grow and provide maturity to the students.

Praise God for Ben and Jazmin’s Work in the church these last months.

Keep the Rubio Family and their plans for this year

Pray for Beto and his studies in the School of Bible in Quito

Keep Bill and Lety in your prayers so they can return soon to the work in Leon. Also, pray for his family to be saved, and protected with health, and the new baby girl - Sarah.

WE ask that our vision can be shaped and directed by what God is wishing we can do. IT will be a fast time and busy one. To mature churches, and build leadership is not easy.

Ask for the Spirit to lead us.

The church desires to be incarnational and missional, but much is needed in the part of our members. Pray that we can have humility to learn and listen to his word.

Everything we do cost money. SO we ask that God can raise givers to provide what our needs, as well as the church’s needs. Cameron has lead us to victory in many areas and we praise God for them.

Thank God for Jay and Bonnie for their love to us.

Praise God for many givers which make possible for us to be here. The Lord will reward your kindness.

Keep my studies at ACU to continue to go well. And ask for wisdom and money for my education.

In short.....we are glad to be his servants. IT is not easy, but he died for us, and we are merely following his steps. WE see a great eternal future coming, and we hope to see you there with us too.

“Don't invest in potential; invest in proveness.” - Neil Cole

For a missionary it is hard to see December come. It is the time when all employees get an end of the year bonus, donation, or at least a hope for a increase in pay. But for us we have to wait for budget cuts, and expectation for a lower pay cut or even loss. See the beginning of the year is time to make new resolutions which are all internal, personal, and simply material. Such as loosing weight; but make better ones.

As the first week of the month of December has arrived we have received news about loosing support starting January 1st. Can you imagine loosing 20% or 30% of your income in a matter of weeks?

Well, it is not a complaint. We will move forward with the church plants as we have done for the last decade. God is faithful to his mission. And we desire to respond in faith. See, if we would wait to be fully supported.....we would not be here. Here are a few points to remember:

We are both professionals, yet live with one income.
We have no retirement.
We have rented a house for six plus years without equity.
We own one car.
We have one credit card, (almost full!)
Student Loans are being paid, but not advancing
We have two cultures to deal with, and have to pay many bills. Such as two insurances for the car
We have no health insurance.
We got in debt to be in the mission field.
and other stuff....

Although we have all these challenges today. Our commitment has been to plant churches, and make disciples. WE do not intend to measure to all perfect American standards; nor Mexican ones! But we do need to reconsider what we are hearing from churches, individuals and people who adjust their budgets. Should we be here?

Now, let me be clear that we have never made a list of what we need as a minimum. Because God is using great people who make it possible to still be here. And we do listen to them too. So we stay.

At the moment we have seen many come to Christ, churches have elders, new births of bodies around the central part of Mexico. We travel to Tepic, Tepatitlan, Tequila City, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Miguel Allende, Comonfort, Queretaro, Silao, and the city of Leon. We are not the only ones doing these ministries. But we see God providing for our giftedness to be used for his glory.
On average most missionaries stay on the field almost three years. We do not want to be average. Do you? We have been here almost seven and plan to stay more.

WE have much to do. There are many people who will need to hear about Jesus, and not only hear, but be trained and equipped to serve others. Mission work is not just quick fixes. It is a long term relationship with people who God loves. They are not just numbers we report, or simple photos to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

So, we are more then thankful for all of you for making it possible for me and my family to be here. WE need you. Keep providing.

For you all changing budgets. Thanks too. We are confident God will provide in other forms. And we pray that those ministries where you are sending your money will bring glory to his name.
